Low-fat Pizza Recipe... Anyone got one?

Quote  |  Reply

I ate a frozen pizza last night... the whole thing... 600 calories and it wasn't even satisfying. I was wondering if anyone had any good pizza recipes, esspecially for crust. I want to be able to make some low-fat personal pizzas with vegies and such. Personal sized pizzas will help me with portion control... one of my biggest problems.

Use any pizza dough recipe and leave out the olive oil.  You can knead a little dried oregano into the dough for added flavor.  Make a fat free, thick marinara sauce.  Top it with vegetables like mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc.  Use very little cheese and choose a reduced fat variety.

ditto claires reply re topping/sauce and in addition consider using Turkish pide/pocket bread or flat Lebanese bread for the base,  I have been doing that for many years and is fab and easy when in a rush.  I HATE reduced fat cheese as most of it doesn't melt properly. I use Mozzarella which is lower in fat than reg cheeses but is not as strong tasting so use in combination with a strong cheese that is lower in fat (love Danish Feta)....yum thinking of it now.

Also great snack is same pide/flat type bread brushed lightly with olive oil, sprinkled with lemon pepper and baked quickly in oven..makes great chips...arguably better than commercial crisps.... good luck

Other low-fat crust variations:

  • low fat tortilla
  • reduced calorie bread, rolled flat
  • low fat 'FlatOut' flat bread - use a half piece

Low fat variations on toppings:

  • Use turkey or beef sausage, smoked, etc. Never use regular types.
  • Try some non-smoked meats - ground beef, chopped chicken, etc.
  • low fat Mozzarella melts pretty well.
  • Use LOTS of veggies, very little meat
  • Use LOTS of spices & herbs, less cheese

Remember - you are changing your attitude, taste buds and cravings. Not everything will taste "normal" at first - but it won't take long before the lower fat/calorie versions are normal to you and the regular versions don't taste good at all!

I look for a low fat/low calorie crust from the store or make my own out of buckwheat or whole wheat flour. Then I use my own homemade pizza sauce or something from the store. Most are low in calories but shop around.  Then I top with all kinds of veggies and sometime chicken. Olives, mushrooms, peppers, jalapeños, banana peppers, zucchini, tomato. Just about anything. Then I use no cheese or fat free mozzarella or extra sharp cheddar.

Here are some good ideas

edited for spelling...

2.25 cup whole wheat flour

2 tbsp milled flax seed

1 cup luke warm water

1 package dry active yeast

1 tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

Its 70 calories a "slice" (if you divide the recipe into sixteen pieces) and 0.5 g fat. If you use fat free mozzarella and fresh veggies as toppings its going average under 150 calories a piece. Not to shabby for pizza and nearly fat free to boot!

This is an awesome crust...you would have to pare it down for single serving though. It alone is enough for two large crusts. I do freeze this though with great success!

This is a Weight Watcher's recipe & really good.

Deep-Dish Pizza Casserole

Source: Cooking Light

1 pound ground round
1 (15 ounce) can chunky Italian-style tomato sauce
Cooking spray
1 (10 ounce) can refrigerated pizza crust dough
6 (1 ounce) slices part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided

Cook meat in a medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until browned, stirring until it crumbles. Drain, if necessary, and return to skillet. Add tomato sauce, and cook until heated.

While meat cooks, coat a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Unroll pizza crust dough, and press into bottom and halfway up sides of baking dish. Line bottom of pizza crust with 3 slices mozzarella cheese. Top with meat mixture. Bake, uncovered at 425 degrees F for 12 minutes.

Top with remaining 3 cheese slices, and bake 5 additional minutes or until crust is browned and cheese melts. Cool 5 minutes before serving.

When I crave pizza I make pita pizza!  I just use a whole wheat or whole grain pita, plain tomato paste with some oregano adn basil sprinkled on top, deli sliced ham, pineapple chunks (you can use any toppings obviously, I just like hawaiian pizza) and very little part-skim mozza cheese.  Not only is it less calories cuz of the thin pita instead of a thick  crust, but it's very yummy and so fast to make.

Edit: 1 whole grain pita is 160 calories, 1/4 cup part-skim mozza is 60 calories, 2 tbsp of tomato paste is 26 calories (you might want to use 3 tbsp though), and your toppings are....well depends on what you're using, but obviously veggies would be the lowest cals. So, about 250 cals or so plus your topping

+1 on the pita pizzas!!  I use pitas from Garden of Eatin' that are about 140 cal.  Add an oz. of mozzarella (60 cal), 1/2 oz. feta (30 cal) and some veggies (I like spinach, onions, & sun-dried tomatoes) and you've got  a very satisfying pizza for under 300 calories.
