Low sodium sandwich meat??

Quote  |  Reply

I've seen a couple people mention this and I am just curious if anyone has seen lower sodium meats in grocery stores??  I tend to eat sandwiches daily, and would love to start getting this if possible...thanks!

Almost by definition, most meat sold for sandwiches is preserved... in salt.  The best way to get low sodium cooked meat is to cook your own without any added salt.

I'm sure they will have it at the deli counter if you ask. I always used to buy low sodium Land o Lakes american cheese at the deli counter back when I ate that stuff.  I'm fairly certain Boar's Head makes lower sodium choices of turkey, ham, and roast beef.

thanks guys!!

Boar's Head is actually not that bad when it comes to sodium.  As long as you're eating the serving size, of course.  I've seen worse, and it tastes great.  Their lower sodium meat and cheese options are still just as good.
I don't know how much it helps but I always rinse my lunch meat.  I found one that tastes good but has WAY too much sodium, but rinsing it definitely makes it taste less salty!

You should go to your local Whole Foods or Trader Joes and buy some organic, nitrate free lunch meat.

Thanks for this post. I'm on a low sodium diet and thought I'd have to give up sandwiches altogether. Great suggestions.

Depending on how well-stocked your supermarket is, they probably have some low-sodium meats and cheeses. Swiss cheese or jarlsberg is generally pretty low in sodium to begin with. If you're really having a tough time finding low-sodium meats, you could bake up a couple of chicken or turkey breasts at the beginning of the week and just slice some bits off each day to make sandwiches with. Even with chicken you cook yourself though, a lot of the raw chicken in the supermarket has sodium added to it - anything that says "with natural flavorings" pretty much means "injected with salt water". Look for a package that says "minimally processed".

Since you love sandwiches, have you ever tried veggie sandwiches?  They will definitely be much lower sodium than any lunch meat, and they are very yummy!  They can be crunchy, juicy, and very satisfying - not to mention you can make a "dagwood" (aka huge sandwich) for much fewer calories than by using meat/cheese.

Some good fillings I have found - well, go to your local Subway and see what they put on the veggie works.

Erik once posted his solution to the high sodium in lunch meats.  Put them in a plastic container of water in the refrigerator overnight.  Drain and pat dry.

I seldom buy deli meats, but when I do it's Boar's Head.  Also, Swiss Lorraine has a low sodium cheese that's not bad at all.
