Lucky break's for not eating something unhealthy

Quote  |  Reply

Have you ever had a lucky break where you were planning on eating something unhealthy and fate stepped in to help you out?

I had to run an errand at work and could not get to my normal lunch place (Panera) to get a salad. There was a Checker's near my errand and I got the Fish Sandwich combo, luckily when I got back to the office to eat it I found the sandwich was on moldy bread, which ruined my appetite. If I had eaten the Sandwich, medium fries and soft drink I would have eaten over 1,200 calories!! There were other combo meals that would have been closer to 2,000 calories.

I was so happy that I did not eat the meal, I felt that it was good karma telling me that I know better than to stop there in the first place..

That is a pretty extreme karma story - great stuff!

It seems sometimes when you really want to do well though you make your own luck. I went to lunch with my brother Saturday, and he suggested a pub downtown. I agreed, knowing tha tpubs can be dangerous places for healthy eating! As it turned out, it was a cuban pub serving some traditional food - I was full after our appetizer plate of olives, cheese, sausage (he ate all of these) and veggie sticks, pits wedges served with black bean hummus (I ate all of those) - and my salad with wasabi dressing.

I am not saying I would have ordered a burger and fries - but I would not have come out nearly as satisfied and feeling bad had they not had some better options.

For the record my brother had the half appetizer followed by the two eggs / sausage / bread / hash browns. He weighs about 150 at 6'3'' so karma does tend to tease us sometimes (although I would be scared to know his cholesterol).

In one of my classes we had a workshop that simulated old age. One of the stations required that you eat a cookie while having certain impairments. I was nervous and wondering how to get out of eating one when the professor came around & gave me a sign to wear stating that I had diabetes & could not participate in the cookie-eating station ! I was the only one in a class of about 30 kids to get it. It was almost creepy how it worked out.

haha, thats amazing, I wish I had  no bad food karma! perhaps I do and just don't realize it? But I really appreciate this post, its gonna make me look out for lucky breaks.

Maybe the best karma is self control karma.

Not that I have that one AT ALL. But.....its something I can wish for ;)

It is so funny that this should be in my email today because just yesterday i had a karma moment! First I want to say that I am on a low fat low cal. diet for health reasons and to lose weight. its very important to watch my fat intake. Last night my family and I decided to eat at Burger King for supper and I was thinking " Ive been eating good all day and it really is cheaper to eat a burger", rationalizing right?! so I got a burger and side salad instead of fries and even took the burger apart  and just ate the meat after smooshing it to get the grease out. feeling so proud of myself on our way home I told my husband I deserve something sweet after all I denied myself those extra cal. so we stopped at the grocery store to get something decadent (I was thinking ben and jerrys)but the more I looked and read the cal. and fat counts I started getting Major indigestion. By the the time I left the store I felt really nauseous so I just grabbed my usual no sugar added low fat fudgecicles and left.  I think that was the Good Lords way of popping me one as a warning because I've rationalized a couple times lately.

A little while back I ate at Souplantation and *thought* I did extremely well. As a special treat for myself I took 2 grilled-cheese breadsticks (sooo good) back home with me to eat (I ran out of time to eat them at the restaurant).

But when I got out of the car I tripped and dropped them both onto the asphalt. I was so pissed and grumpy. My whole day was ruined.

UNTIL... I went on CC and realized I had actually eaten way over 1600 calories during that lunch! And each breadstick was almost 300 calories more!! That would have put me at 2200cal in just ONE meal, so I was reeeally glad I was thwarted out of eating the extra 600 calories.

It did happen to be a lucky break for your diet, and whatever it takes to get that second chance, or trick yourself into behaving, I'm totally for it. Sometimes we need that.

Although, what about going back to the establishment that sold you the moldy food and complaining? Moldy food is truly unacceptable, and you should complain when you get bad food - I kind of view it as the consumer's responsibility to complain, so the restaurant doesn't get away with it.

If you were at the point where you were just maintaining your favorite weight, and had earned this meal as a treat (or at least part of it - who can afford a 1200 calorie lunch, right?), I'm just thinking you might have had a slightly different perspective on the event. You did pay money for something that you didn't get.

Diana - I actually called the restaurant to let them know about the moldy bun, so that they would make sure that there were no other bad buns. They were very gracious about it and offered me a free meal, but I figured that I had narrowly avoided eating the food once and didn't want to put myself in the position to eat it again so I didn't take them up on the free meal.

Just this past Friday I had plans to go to a friends house to have a 'pizza night' with a few families and their children. I was SOOOOOO in the mood for pizza I was going to let myself splurge. We were to meet up at 6:00 but my family hit so much traffic do to the rain here in NJ that we didn't get there until closer to 6:30.

Well, the pizza was delivered for dinner at 6:00 so it was a bit cold - I need my pizza hot to really enjoy - and her microwave was broken!!!! Another mom brought a salad - had 1 small slice (no crust) and salad with light dressing. Which was much better than I would have done had there been piping hot pizza waiting for me at the end of a long week!

that is so true for me

i was at this huge party it was gr8 biggest performers in the country open buffet from all over the world appetizers every where , i have never been to such an event b4

the 1st 3 hours were a struggle i managed not to have any drinks , only some nuts , and 1 salmon rap

just b4 the buffet i was walking in shame waiting for my binge - have been strict for almost 2 month- and then my company seemed reluctant to go

they started saying they werent enjoying their time as much as we thought and all decided to leave after all it is ust food they said :)

i was extremely happy though walking past that chocolate fountain was a bit hard ;)
