I tried a "LUNA bar" for the first time today, and it was really yummy!-- cookies n cream... mmm... but I was curious if anyone knew if it is okay to have more than one in a day, cause I know they're loaded up with vitamins and my nutrition class professor told us that it can be dangerous to have an overload of vitamins... is having two bars in one day not a good idea, especially if I'm gonna eat another one tomorrow for breakfast?
Personally, I wouldn't worry as much about the vitamins in these as much as I'd worry about the amounts of sugar and preservatives. Protein bars can be loaded with as much bad stuff as good stuff sometimes. Read your label carefully.
i love luna bars, and clif. it won't do you any harm, but do possibly try to avoid eating those more than once a day.
ishipop has a point - they are high in sugar, but also in nutrients.
i just think it would be more beneficial if you relied more on "real food" to get your calories. try fruit.
i had to stop buying clif bars because i'd eat 5 in a sitting. :(
What if you use them as a meal replacement? ie: One for Breakfast, One for Lunch, then eat a nice well-balanced dinner? That was my thought that I wanted to try because I also had a Luna bar the other day "Chocolate Peppermint Stick" and it was really yummy! :D Any thoughts on my idea?
I eat them when I get a yen for a big yummy chocolate bar there lower in cals than a snickers or milky way but more than one day might not be a good idea ..Ill agree they are high in sugar
thanks guys! But I don't agree that they're high in sugar... most have less than a third of an ounce of sugar... I don't think that that little bit will hurt! :) I work with sugar all day-- I'm in a confectionary arts class.
i would def not worry about an overload of vitamins so much as a poor use of calories! they are great once a day, especially if you are on the run, but calories as part of a healthy healthy diet are ideally got through a variety of healthful, whole foods. For that same 180 calories you could have a fillet of mahi mahi and vegetables, or a bowl of oatmeal and a nonfat yogurt or a peanut butter banana bread....be creative
also luna bars are NOT intended to be meal replacements, 180 calories for one meal is far too low and you would not get enough protein, fat or anything else you need in a day. trust me, i love luna and eat one almost every day...but NOT as a meal replacement
Luna bars do not have too many vitamins. I think your prof was referring to vitamin supplements, which can be lethal in high quantities. Two bars a day is fine. There are no strong and fast rules for eating. If it's what works for you then I say go for it.
For instance, as you probably know from your class, caffeine impedes the body's absorption of calcium. However, if I don't have my milk in the form of a latte, then I don't have it at all. Even if the caffeine reduces the amount of calcium I retain, it's still better than not having any milk at all.
So, if eating your luna bars stops you eating less nutrient rich foods, or stops you from feeling guilty about what you're eating, then enjoy. BTW, a Luna Bar isn't a full breakfast. If you complement it with a fruit and a glass of skim milk, you'll be set to go.
Luna bars are a staple in my pantry - I LOVE them!! I have one for breakfast with a glass of skim milk almost everyday! My fave is Chocolate Caramel Walnut Brownie - definitely satisfies the choco craving!
I have been having a really hard time losing weight lately, though, so maybe that's why. Maybe I'm not eating enough cals, but when I eat more, I gain. Any suggestions?
I love those. I had my first one yesterday. I had the s'mores kind, it was very good!! I think that it would be okay to have 1 or 2 a day.
i absolutely love luna bars too, but only eat them when i'm "on the go" or need something to fill me up before the gym... i wouldn't rely on them as a regular part of my everyday diet.. you're much better of eating "real" food-fruits, veg, etc
Christy, if you're not eating enough, you need to slowly increase your intake. If you increase your intake by 50 calories, and then keep it there for 2-3 days, and increase again, and so on until you reach your target intake, you shouldn't notice any weight gain. Any you do notice will disappear pretty rapidly. I had to increase my intake and my metabolism caught-up pretty darn quickly. Also, assuming your not gaining any weight right now, exceeding your norm by 150 cals over 3 days won't show on the scale any way. After 6 days you've still only gone over your norm (not your target intake) by 450 cals.
