The Machinist (Movie, with the lovely Christian Bale)
Okay, have you SEEN this movie?!?!
My fiance and I were watching it and came to the conclusion that he had to not only be pretty heavily make-uped but also under doctor's orders for this film. (A la Tom Hanks in Cast Away.) I mean, he looks like a freaking Auszwitz's prisoner.
But in the special features, he says straight up that he just didn't eat. O_O! What the heck? I mean, it's his call, but don't you think he could've been a bit more safe with the whole process??
I always loved Christian Bale (Equilibrium, anyone?) but I thought he was a bit more sane than this. Plus, it was simply unattractive.
Anyone else feel the way I feel? I mean, the writer even said he never thought this movie would be made because no actor in their right mind would lose this much weight.
Anyway, for those who haven't seen, a picture that would likely be triggering:
The disturbingness. Yes, he even looked like this in the interviews.
Sorry, I'm just completely in shock!!! The movie was superb, but: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edited to Add: An interview can be found here. I think it's a little crazy to say that he had no affects from being 120 lbs for 6 months, but I dunno, I've never even been 120 lbs, haha. I can understand what he is saying, about getting into character, and the movie was definitely good enough, but still. It boggles my mind!
The movie was alright, but just looked at the pics, YIKES!!!
Wow. Its one thing to gain or lose weight for a role, another thing entirely to be voluntarily anorexic for a role. Im surprised that he agreed to do this.
I read he didn't eat much more than a can of tuna everyday.
I dunno... he's getting paid millions. I'd do it for the money. Plus, I'm sure he had some sort of medical supervision. But I don't think it was make-up tricks at all... that's really how he looked. I remember seeing him in magazines before this movie came out... he looked awful.
Yeah, I saw this movie a while back and didn't even put two and two together on who he was for a while. When I did I was like OMG!! To just not eat....I would have been so afraid of what would happen to my body.
I saw this movie and his thinness was really disturbing. I didn't even recognize him until my husband pointed out that it was him.
I also heard that he restricted himself to a can of tuna and an apple a day...for six months. He has to have done some damage himself.
If he said he's been checked out at the doctor and has been given an all-clear, I'm sure he's fine. For people with eating disorders to do serious damage to themselves, it's over a long period of time. 6 months isn't really that long.
Whats as equally amazing as the weight he lost is the weight he gained immediately after The Machinist for his role in Batman. To fluctuate and stress your body that much in such a short period of time will definitely do damage. Maybe not now, but I bet Christian Bale will pay the price later in his life.
Christian Bale lost even MORE weight for Werner Herzog's excellent Rescue Dawn; in which he dropped 55 pounds and was down to 98 - yes ninety eight pounds!!! Then he buffed up for The Dark Knight; although I did think he looked quite pale and not as buff as he was in Batman Begins. What a method actor eh!
Christian Bale actually wanted to lose more weight for the movie, but the director wouldn't let him. He was already getting pretty weak. How crazy! He must have been very committed to that movie!
all actors have a little craziness in them. you ever see christopher guests' 'for your consideration? ..."in every actor there lives a tiger, a pig, an ass and a nightingale."
