Which maintenance calories am I supposed to eat?

Quote  |  Reply

When people say to eat your maintenance calories once in a while (to boost metabolism, to break plateau, etc.)....is it the maintenance calories for the current weight you are or the maintenance calories for the goal weight?

I'm thinking its for the goal weight but wanted to be sure.  For me, it's only a difference of 100 calories which is kind of weird considering I have 15 lbs to lose for goal....but that's another question.

For your current weight..... the idea is get your full energy requirements.   As it's only 100 cals in your case it's probably immaterial.  However, for anyone with a bigger gap between 'eventual' and 'current' weight, it's important to stress that it's the higher number they need.

Thanks Jane.  Don't you think it's odd that it's only a 100 calorie difference to maintain at 120 than to maintain at 136?  According to CC that's what I got, all other settings being equal.

It sounds right to me - I lost 35 pounds, and my burn changed by about 200. So 15 pounds, 100cal sounds right.

i don't know, that sounds pretty silly.  lol  how could 100 calories make a fifteen pound difference?  I guess if you are sedentary it would make a big difference.

I don't think it's silly....  I went from 200lbs to 150lbs a few years ago and my calorie intake needs probably only dropped 200 in all that time.  I didn't change my weight-loss intake once.
