For maintenance, should you eat the calories you need for your BMR?
Asked by anonymous on Mar 07, 2009 in Weight Maintenance

After you reach your goal weight, if you start eating the same amount as your BMR, not less, will you gain?

Answer

You will lose weight, and not maintain, if you eat only the calories needed to cover your BMR.  Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the calories your body burns at rest to maintain the functions performed by the heart, lungs, brain, kidneys, etc.  In addition to your BMR, you need calories for physical activity, including exercise and work.  To find your maintenance requirements, use the Calorie Target calculator in the Tools section.  Enter the same weight for your current weight and goal weight and use today’s date as your goal date.
