lets make a DONT EAT THIS list

Quote  |  Reply
has anyone else ever found out they have been "tricked" for quite some time by a seemingly "safe" food, and then later discovered it has non-vegetarian ingredients?

i felt so sick the day i caught out of the corner of my eye "anchovy" on a packet of:

caesar salad dressing

can anyone add more items to make a list of things to watch out for?

Countless make-it-yourself rice rice packages have chicken fat in them, so be careful of those. Ramen noodles (atleast the oriental flavor) has chicken broth.

But yeah, you gotta look out for crap like that. And people wonder why we get cancer with dead fish floating around in our salad dressing... In my opinion, meat is unnecessarily added to alot of foods and I'm getting tired of it.

Oh, and skittles has gelatin in it, so, naturally...
carl's jr

just anything from there
I thought gelatin was made from veggie stuff now.
dannon lightnfit yogurt has "kosher gelatin" in it. aka dead animals.

i was eating it for ages!!  8(
how is it kosher?
If it is green and you do not remember putting broccoli in the tupperware container in the corner of the fridge, do not eat it.

If the grapes have turned into raisens or have a nice layer of white fuzz on it, do not eat it. Wine may come from grapes, and wine gets better with age, grapes in there natural state do not!

Last, but not least,
If it is brown, and runny, and has a bad odor, do not eat it. It is not fudge......
Very depressingly i discovered cheesecake is often non-veggie, they put gelatine in to set it. Also most hard cheese has renitwhich is disguesting. Resturants use cheese in loads veggie dishes but im sure they dont bother checking that its vege cheese first.

On the flip side some 'meat' products actually have the veggie safe sign. Do you have pot noddles in the US? anyway both the chicken and beef flavours are just soya and flavouring and say that they are safe for veggies!!!
  • BK Veggie Burgers & Buns are made with egg whites/dairy  (non vegan)
  • Taco Bell Sour Cream is made with gelatin
  • Barbeque Baked Lays are made with Chicken Fat
  • Lime Tostitos have dairy in them (non vegan)
Bloody marys are made with worcestershire sauce which contains anchovies. Tricky just like the caesar salad dressing.
Many types of breads from bakeries use an egg wash on all of their breads.
I remember when McDonalds had a veggie burger at one point, with tiny letters at the bottom of the sign saying "may contain chicken/beef" so, make sure when you order vegetarian stuff at restaurants that it is actually vegetarian.

definately lots of geletin hiding in foods everywhere
Oh! Thanks for the tip black_boned_angel, I didn't even thinking of checking for meat in my drinks! I mean, why would I? thanks!
McDonald's fries contain beef broth

Most packaged rice/pasta mixes (like Rice A Roni) contain animal broth.

And for the vegans:

a lot of pasta sauces sneak cheese in there

Cinnamon Toast Crunch has milk in it (ew)

8th Continent Soymilk has vitamin D derived from animal sources

(and this one pisses me off more than anything) most "soy cheese" contains milk proteins
Additional note: I actually think it's kind of a good thing - our status as veg*ns makes it imperative for us to read labels so we catch all sorts of other evils like trans fats and HFCS that others might miss.  Like, did you know that there are NO commercially available whole grain breads without HFCS?  NONE!!!!  I have to get my bread at Whole Foods; there's no other option.
hungry howies pizza sauce has fish in it! yuck!
Is anybody aware of whether or not bean tacos from Taco Bell are vegetarian?  I live on a college campus with very limited healthy vegetarian options, so eating a balanced diet can be tricky.
Yes they are :) Except for the sour cream, which contains gelatin.

The 7-layer burritos are great too!
the guac is also a no no.
If requested, Taco Bell will send a list of their menu items that are suitable for vegetarians.

Under their lacto-ovo heading, they list the following: Pintos & Cheese, Bean Burrito, Bean Tostada, Mexican Rice, Seven Layer Burrito (no sour cream), Cheese, Gordita Shells, Creamy Jalapeno Sauce, Creamy Lime Sauce, Pepper Jack Sauce, Baja Sauce, Fiesta Salsa, Red Sauce, Hot/Mild/Fire Sauce, Green Sauce, Pizza Sauce, Guacamole, and Taco Shell.

Under their vegan heading, they list: Bean Burrito (without cheese), Bean Tostada (without cheese), Mexican Rice (without cheese), Seven Layer Burrito (no sour cream, no cheese), Hot/Mild/Fire Sauce, Fiesta Salsa, Red Sauce, Soft Tortillas, Pizza Sauce, Green Sauce, Guacamole, and Taco Shell. Taco Bell used to have two different distributors for the Mexican Rice. They are no longer using the distributor which had milk derivatives in the rice.

NOTE that the sour cream does contain gelatin, which is animal based.
i wonder when they changed the guac... it use to have gelatin in it also.
