lets make a DONT EAT THIS list
has anyone else ever found out they have been "tricked" for quite some time by a seemingly "safe" food, and then later discovered it has non-vegetarian ingredients?
i felt so sick the day i caught out of the corner of my eye "anchovy" on a packet of:
caesar salad dressing
can anyone add more items to make a list of things to watch out for?

Most worstechire sauces have anchovies in them too.
Panera's Muffins, esp. the Pumpkin Muffins have gelatin in them. Boo! DO NOT EAT!
And yeah, lite foods almost always have a gelatin, modified corn product, or something chemical or manmade in them. I think you'd be better off eating the full-fat version that has fewer or absolutely no crazy preservatives/potential carcinogens/PHO's in it than to eat the lite junk. But if you are dieting... a calorie is a calorie.
As far as bread w/o HCFS, I know of only two: Nature's Own and Oroweat Oatnut. I try to buy them, but damn, that's 'spensive.

Watch Your Mouth
Not what comes out but what goes in. Sure, you might follow the two-second rule when you drop your Tofutti Cutie on your kitchen floor, but you won?t want to give these disgusting hidden animal ingredients the time of day.
Casein?Whey?s cousin, casein is made from curdled milk. Yuck!
Gelatin?Rhymes with "skeleton." Coincidence? I think not. Gelatin is a protein made by boiling cows? and pigs? skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Jell-O? Hell, no!
Honey?Sure, honey tastes sweet, but you?ll get a bad taste in your mouth when you learn how it?s "harvested."
From a former beekeeper: "[T]ypically, beekeepers are gloved and netted to avoid stings (nearly every bee who stings will die due to her entrails being pulled from her body attached to her stinger.) Then the hives are opened as quickly as possible and the bees are ?smoked.? Smoke from a smoldering fire carried in a ?smoker? is pumped into the hive and the bees are ?calmed.? In spite of this, the combs are pulled quickly and many bees are crushed in the process. When a bee is hurt, she releases a chemical message that alerts and activates the hive members who proceed to attack the intruder?giving their lives in the process."
Lard?Lard is such a gross word, it almost makes you wonder why they just don?t call it what it is: "Fat from hog abdomens."
Pepsin? If the thought of eating lard turns your stomach, stay away from pepsin, a clotting agent from pigs? stomachs, used in some cheeses and vitamins.
Rennet?Certain words just make you cringe, like coagulate, congeal, clot?which is what rennet, an enzyme taken from baby calves? stomachs, is used for in cheese production.
Stearic Acid?It may sound less gross than "lard," but stearic acid, which often rears its ugly head in chocolate and vitamins, comes from a fatty substance taken from slaughtered pigs? stomachs?or from cows, sheep, or dogs and cats euthanized in animal shelters. Still want to chew on that piece of Fido?
Cetyl Palmitate?Check your head if you?re using margarine that contains cetyl palmitate, the fancy term for the waxy oil derived from sperm whales? heads or from dolphins. "I can?t believe it?s not " oh, wait. It is" Whale head wax"?
Urea?Urea comes from urine and other "bodily fluids." It?s used to "brown" baked goods, like pretzels. Um, yeah. And the oven is for ??
When going to any convenience store, take a look around and see what other food services they offer. Often, you can get made-to-order sandwiches and salads. For instance, Speedway gas stations can make up MTO veggie wraps and sandwiches, and you can also snag bagels, garlic fries (minus the cheese), and cheese-free nachos.

Vegan Fare at Restaurant Chains
Some well-meaning vegans have chosen to ignore the fast-food and chain restaurant market because of its emphasis on animal flesh, but the bottom line is this: In order to convince meat-eaters to stop eating animals, vegetarian options must be convenient and available in the places where meat-eaters munch. There will never be vegan or vegetarian options at restaurant chains unless vegetarians and vegans support them. Some of us never thought that we?d see the day when Burger King or Bennigan?s offered veggie burgers, but now that they do, the millions of carnivores who eat there can see that choosing meatless meals is easy and tasty. This is a huge step in the right direction.
Almost every restaurant has at least one vegan dish available. By making educated choices and asking the server for assistance, dining out can be a delicious?and cruelty-free?experience! We put together this handy guide to help you navigate the chain restaurant world.

You can click on whatever places you want below the Applebees info. I was grossed out to find this: "Dunkin Donut Bagels contain an ingredient L-Cysteine, which they have stated is made from duck feathers."
Ew, much?

One thing that you should be careful about when eating out is cross contamination. I've worked at a lot of restaurants as a server, and if a cook is busy, they usually don't care, they won't clean the grill between cooking sausages, and then cooking your veggie burger. Or they will use the same utensils. Also, most places only use one deep fryer, so if you were to have fries or something, it will be cooked in the same basket and oil as the chicken strips. I think it's usually better to just eat at home, or at least somewhere that you can see them prepare your food.
To add to lorilie's fantastic list, a St Louis chain called Crazy Bowls and Wraps has some very tasty vegan items.
I am omnivore, my wife is vegetarian.
One day I asked my wife why the split pea soup was yellow instead of green. I thought peas were green. So I read the can and in the middle of the ingredients was lard. My wife hasn't eaten it since. I don't remember what brand it was, sorry, but you better check your cans!

What about if you have to take prescription medicine? I don't know if mine is coated in gelatine. It's not a capsule.

Allright, so I kinda gathered everyones info and put it into an actual list. I am gonna print it off and kinda keep it with me or keep it on a fridge just as a reminder.
I just recently became a vegetarian ((semi...hard to explain)) and I am slowly working my way into veganism. Hopefully I will be a vegan in about 1-2 years. Yeah I know, thats a really long time.
Anywho I gotta question...
I go to this lunch program and there is usually meat and I usually refuse food, but I feel really rude. ((me and my best friend volunteer there and she is a vegetarian too)) and sometimes they make us noodles for us. But it was chicken noodles. I feel really bad refusing it, but I felt guilty, and since I wasnt really sure if it was a bad food, I ate it.
BUT
What is bad about it? What is chicken and beef broth made of??? The actual animal?
I am steering clear of it now, but I'd just like to know
Thanks

I am steering clear of it now, but I'd just like to know
Thanks
Well, the old-fashioned way to make chicken or beef broth is to take a bunch of meat and bones and veggies and simmer them a long time so their flavour soaks into the water. I think food factories use the same basic process. Not very vegetarian.
Eeewwww
Thanks for the info.
I know I'll be sticking away from that now.
It seems I've got a lot more research to do.

Nancy's is a great brand of yogurt. They even have individual packs with fruit on top to add to it. For a super tasty treat I just get the big ole bucket of nancy's, scoop out a serving, add brown sugar and granola (in the health food section of my local store). Mix and eat, yummm!!!
Cup-o-noodles now offers "vegetarian" vegetable noodles. Actually SAYS vegetarian on it.
I'm so grossed out by the whole taco bell thing. I've been veggie for 3 years now and I have been eating it unknowingly. Why the heck do they have to add gelatin!! EW!
I second the person who said always ask if a restaurant serves their refried beans with lard/animal fat and always ask your asian restaurant not to use fish/oyster sauce. Don't just say "are there meat/animal products in the dish?" Because so many people don't consider fish animals. I mean.. since when did fish grow from the ground?
OH, Trader Joes sells really good miso soup... One problem. Clam extract. *barf* I was in rural Alaska and someone sent me a bunch of packets of it without the box (easier to ship). I loved it and asked someone else for more and she sent the part of the box with the ingredients.... ACK!
Kids fruit snacks.. some have gelatin and some have carnuba wax (veggie friendly). Always check the ingredients.
I love hot tamales and sweedish fish. Yum. Also, a lot of asian markets sell "gel" stuff that is made with seaweed extract (agar-agar). We get those for my son's lunches. Nice and small treat.
Okay, done now ;)

I think all vegetarians have been tricked by hidden 'gelatin' and 'high fructose corn syrup' ingredients. I can't preach any more than to beware of that and ALWAYS read the LABELS. =D
Even supposed natural juices have them...

I knew high fructose corn syrup was evil, but it's not even vegetarian?? What's this, bell pepper? At least here in Canada we see a lot less of it - sugar costs a third what it does in the States so the economics are completely different.
geltain!!?? What is it!? I thought it was just crap that got thick...like in jello?
gelatin is extracted from the parts of an animal carcass besides the meat. I've made chicken broth from scratch in the bad old days, using meat and bones, and the soup gelled when I chilled it - high gelatin content. No the least bit vegetarian.
