How to make new friends, as an adult?

Quote  |  Reply

So now that I am not in school I have realized that I don't know how to make new friends? I am not a real big bar person, so I find I don't really have anyone to go out with.

Any suggestions or anyone from metro Detroit want to hang out sometime?

I am not from Detroit but use what you use to ask that question - the internet! I'm sure you have a hobby etc,

- join forums/communities related to that hobby, chat with the people there,

- join a local meeting group consisting of foreigners coming to Detroit and offer your help in showing them how the life is in your town,

- do volunteer work (you meet new people in your co-workers AND do something good AND spend your time not becoming a couchpotato),

- call some old school friends and get back in contact,

- learn a new language and do it with a 'tandem-partner' = that means someone teaching you his language in exchange of you teaching him your language,

- any interest in sports? Join a sportclub/fitnessstudio,

- get a boyfriend/girlfriend and meet his/her friends,

- start learning an instrument in a public musicschool, apply by saying you would like to join an orchester/marchingband/band later

- become part of a choir/gospel-choir

and there are about 500 more ways, but that's the most obvious ones ;)

Someone suggested this website to me for networking, but I think a lot of friends could be made here too http://www.meetup.com/

I have not tried it yet because I am shy, lazy and unmotivated but I plan to look more into it. Maybe you can try it. Clubs and groups are a really great way to meet friends. The bar is generally not a good place to meet friends in my opinion.

Go to a hockey game, have a couple of drinks, and pretend to get lost looking for your seat.  If you wear a short enough skirt and stumble on to a couple of people, then rant about the opposing team, they'll befriend you.

Haha, or use the interent.  I've seriously made all of my friends on the internet.  I used to take part in Xanga, and found some peopleI used to go to school with, and their friends thought my comments to my old high school friends were cool, and tehy asked to be added to my journal's friends list so they could read my posts and we all eventually met up throughout the city.

I also used to play in Yahoo chat rooms because I was a bored teenager who was avoiding her studies and parents, and pretty much anything that involved going out into sunlight for, and made a lot of good internet friends, so I've always got someone to talk to online when nobody I know now in person has something else to do.  I also met Alex in an internet chat room.  I thought he was an emo-depressive girl because he complained about popping Benadryl to get to sleep at night, and he had a feminine font colour.  He was the only person in that room who listened to a Japanese rock band I listened to, and he happened to have lived thirty minutes south of me in a little town.  He asked for my MySpace URL and added me, and I saw he was a dude with very few pictures.  Since I was bored, just got back from a trip to New York and was getting ready to go back, I told him I had a digital camera, we could meet and take crasy burrito-eating pictures for his Myspace, and then I'd be on my merry way.  Turns out he was pretty dorky, kind of cute, and became a great friend so I stayed in Ohio, hung out with him more, and eventually got engaged.

Now, the internet can be dangerous at times but I figured, especially since I was a rebelling teen back then, that if I were sane and online, at least one other person had to be, too.
Oh yeah, we also met a cool friend at Kroger.  He was our cashier pretty much every night as we used to go grocery shopping per meal.  And he sold us booze a lot.  It turned out he went to the same night club we went to, but we'd never seen him around there and he'd never seen us, and another dude who he worked with recognised my fiance's last name (Pope, how.. unique :| ), city, and that he looked a lot like a friend of his.  It turns out his friend is my fiance's brother.  Small world :D

Some days you just make friends at the most random places without even trying.

Yeah, she said she wanted friends, not creeps.

I have some what of the same problem. I know plenty of people in my town on a first name basis but not people that I really "hang out" with. I just talk to everyone I met. Cashiers in stores, store employees I just talk up a storm with everyone instead of just get what I need and walk out. As for how to make friends you can hang out with out with everywhere I have no idea.
Now that's offensive.  No person at a hockey game that I have ever met has turned out to be a creep, and no drunkard who has ever fallen on my lap has ever turned out to be a creep.

Just because we know how to curse, jeer, drink, and have a good time does not mean we're creeps.
I know how to do all of those things! And i'm not a creep
Hahaha. :D If I ever meet you, I'm buying you a bagel.
umm...I feel you, as i'm preparing to finish school and possibly move out of state to get a job I have wondered the same thing. For now I do live in metro detroit though...so send me a PM if you want to hang out sometime!
Well, you could take an evening course for interest, and meet like-minded people that way. The advantage there is you already know how to make friends at school (study group, anyone?). Or your job. School and work have always been reliable sources of friends for me.

I also tend to meet people through gaming (board games and RPGs). But if you're not into that, you'd probably find it boring or (at worst) scary.  ;)
