How to make pizza less oily?

Quote  |  Reply
the other pizza thread prompted me to wonder... if you wrap a slice of pizza with paper towel to suck up the dripping oil, how many calories are you saving...

(more of a rhetorical question i suppose. i don't expect anyone to have the exact figures on this)

some?  well all I know is that you would be consuming less than if you did not dab the oil off.  good answer huh?
here's a quick search and answer from ABC News

Blotting pizza makes it healthier: True.

People who blot their pizza always look neurotic. But, they are saving themselves from consuming extra fat and calories. By blotting the grease on top of a pizza with a napkin, you'll eliminate at least 4.5 grams of fat per slice.

So figure 1g fat = 9 calories so 4.5g fat = over 40 calories removed from your pizza.

Dab on!
wow no way...
good tip, thanks!
If you actually eat the paper towel, you don't save on calories, but I suspect that your fibre intake might go up.
this is interesting...you should weigh your papertowel on a digital food scale, then blot the pizza, then weigh the paper towel again.  i think i'm going to try that next time i have some pizza at home!!!
The only way you could figure this out is to weigh a dry paper towel, blot the pizza and weigh it again, then do the math to see how many grams of fat you soaked up.  20 grams of fat (about a tablespoon) is about 120 calories, give or take.
kiigan!  you got there first with that idea - hats off to you!
splitrail - hahaha :-)
Pizza isn't really all that bad.  I eat about 3 or 4 pieces at a time sometimes, and I still am under my calorie limit.  I ate a piece of breakfast pizza this morning with sausage and eggs on it.  And that only put me at 693 calories today including my lunch with it.  I still have dinner to go and 900 more calories to go.
Sounds like no fun to most people, but I skip the cheese on my pizza (it's a vegan thing, haha)...and load it up with veggies...no paper towel necessary...

...but I totally understand that for most people, it's just not the same :)
Make sure you are watching out for the sodium in pizza not just the fat and calories.  A serving of pizza can push me over my sodium limit for day.  Just a friendly reminder.
how many calories is a normal slice of pizza? for example, I order a large cheese pizza, how much is one slice? i tried looking it up, but I can't seem to find what i'm looking for....also - if i ordered a regular pizza with no cheese, just sauce and dough how many calories is that? (i can just add the calories for the veggies) but i wanted to know how much the dough and sauce are typically.
pizza can range anywhere from 100 calories a slice to like 600+ depending on cheese, crust.. well, everything!
I always blot.. even when out with a lot of people in a restaurant.

For the calorie concious: try taking lo-cal pita bread (I use the whole wheat stuff) putting on some sauce, load it with veggies (I use peppers, broccoli and occasionally carrot.. but Im weird) and sprinkle on some skim cheese. and add a bit of meat if you like. It comes out really lo-cal, about 200 cal for a 6" 'pizza'. I actually find it more satisfying than real pizza :)
Interesting, I'll have to try blotting.. I remember trying that years ago, but the cheese would always stick to the paper towel.
sounds like you guys take all the fun out of eating pizza!  Weighing the paper towel, really...... I agree with dabbing off the excess, but I would dab all twelve pieces that I want to eat, which is why we always order a small.

In fact, I think we might have pizza tonight for dinner!

Good idea.
I actually started making my own pizza from scratch because of all of the fat that was on the top of pizza that you order.  It tastes better and is definitely less greasy and fresh.
Well i think it definatly saves calories but as I young adult I know that any amount of grease that can be saved also helps have clearer skin.  Try lowering your grease and oil intake....it works I promise!!!!
yep, luvie and I love to make our own pizza pies!  gonna do it tonite in fact, and I'm deffo going to do the weight the paper towel before and after thing.  will post my results with that later tonite or tomorrow
Wow, I always dab coz the oil just doesn't sit in my stomach. And also that is one main reason I don't eat pepperoni pizza. I stick with hawaiian or chicken pesto mmmm (or other vegi variations). Oh and with Thin Crust. ~.^
Actually there is nothing you eat that affects your skin.  My father is a dermatologist and I actually just had a conversation with him about this the other day.  The only way eating pizza would affect your skin is if after you ate some with your hands you touched your face!  Also the amount of water that you drink does not affect your skin either.
