How to make porridge/oatmeal
Just wondering how everyone else makes their porridge, like how much oats and milk/water do you use to get your favourite porridge?
I don't really use exact measurements, and my ways of making it vary alot, but this is what I'm enjoying at the moment!
I put the amount of oats I think i'll eat in a bowl (about half a cup?). I use the big jumbo oats from health food shops rather than rolled oats. Then I add about a spoonful of oatbran, dried cranberries and raisens and enough milk to cover, plus abit more. Then I microwave it for about 3 mins, stirring every so often. Then I take it out and leave to stand for about 5 or 10 mins, as the big oats take longer to absorb liquid. Then I stir it up and add some almonds and eat.
2oz rolled oats + 10floz mixed milk and water.... Heat in a small saucepan until simmering. Turn off the heat, put on the lid and leave for 5 or 10 minutes. Reheat and stir.....
My favorite:oatmeal in a blender!
Put 1/4-1/3 cup dry oats with about a cup of milk in blender. Let the oats soak there for about 5 min so they soften. Turn on blender, whizz for a few seconds until it's nicely blended. Pour mixture into pot and cook over stove until it thickens to a pudding-like texture. You can add vanilla or cinnamon or anything you like.
It tastes JUST LIKE CREAM OF WHEAT! Which is awesome, because there is no such thing as cream of wheat over here. Plus it's like, healthier or something. :)
30g oats & 20g all bran heated up with 100mls milk (plus a little water) I then usually add peanut butter and a little cinnamon or some raisins and yoghurt.

I make a big batch and eat all week. 6 cups water, 1 1/3 cup steel cut oats. Bring water to boil add cinnamon and some vanilla and a little salt, add oats, bring back to boil cook 1/2 an hour. I sometimes cook it with crushed pineapple or else add some no sugar added apple pie filling after its done. Apple sauce works well too. One trick I learned for reheating is to put a wet paper towel over the top, keeps it from drying out in the microwave.
I just mix 1 dl (a bit under half a cup) oats with one cup milk/water (half of each), add a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of frozen fruit. Blueberries are my favourite.

add one bay leaf nut meg cinimon
this is very important add 80% to 90% oats and 10% to 20% cream of wheat to water while pot content is still cold form tap only use large oats flakes makes better texture and taste
bring to a boil while stiring continuously with a spatula "the same one used to flip eggs"
add sugar and sweeten to taste
small pinch of salt to enhance sugar effect
as broth increases in heat reduce stove temp
if broth starts to splach add more liquid as needed
finely grated dried coconut table of tea spoon full
vanilla and or almond extract 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon
add 30% milk and 10% evap milk as needed refine taste reduce thickness of broth

20 minutes of total heat on oatmeal will cook the mixture
Quaker Old Fashion Oats......single serving 150 calories before add on's.
In microwave safe bowl....add 3/4 cups water, dash of salt, 1/2 cup of Oats..stir.
Note: I like mine thick, add a little more water if you want it thinner.
Microwave on high for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Add sweetner of your choice and cinnamon, ground flaxseed, etc.
Hot bowl of cereal in 3 minutes.
P.S. I like a splash of unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze (40 calories a cup) if it is too thick.
I have a Zojirushi rice cooker (best. small. kitchen. appliance. EVER) with a porridge setting. I put in a pinch of salt, 1/4 cup Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats, and about 1 cup of water (I like my oats very slightly soupy). Switch it on and let it do its thing, and voila! Perfect oats every single time, every single day. Love, love, love. The Zojirushi was worth every single penny, just for my morning porridge every day.
It varies, but lately it's been
2/3 c rolled oats
1/2 c corn meal
1 c Bob's wheat bran
dash of salt
Toast the dry mixture on the stovetop, to taste.
Bring 3-1/2 cups of water to a boil and add the mix. Simmer covered until all the water is taken up. Then refrigerate in a 4 c covered container. After cooling the mix is very firm and can be cut in slices. Sort of like a pound cake.
This makes enough oatmeal to last me a week. I reheat slices in the microwave, and top with savory seasonings of various kinds. Turmeric, spicy giardinara relish, lime pickle, grated cheese, black pepper, polish sausage, even some garlicky fried duck bits this AM. Whatever's handy.
Also a rice cooker user.
1 cup Steel Cut Oats 3 cups water, brown rice setting (don't have a porridge setting) When it beeps, add 1 cup skim milk, leave on warm for 10 minutes and it's ready. 4 servings
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup low fat milk
1/2 cup water
1 egg white
1/2 cup mashed pumpkin
1/4 tsp cinammon
1/8 cup raisins
i eat it with bannana and 1 tbspn pb
I get my bowl and pour about half a cup, sometimes a little more if im hungry or if it has to last me longer..
then put cold water in, untill its not REALLY runny but all coverd
stick it in the microwave for about 1 min 45
stir
then again for another 40 seconds
cover with cold water
which turns warm
then EAT :D

45g oats, 250 mL water
100g apple crumble-vanilla yogourt, 10g cinnamon apple crisps, 2 tsp milled flax seed, 1 tsp cinnamon, 10g pecans, 8g almonds
Other variations:
mixed berry yogourt, blackberries/raspberries, walnuts, cinnamon
canned pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, almonds/pecans, vanilla yogourt
cherry yogourt, chocolate chips, dried cherries/cranberries, cocoa powder
raisins, apple crisps, cinnamon, walnuts
