I usually eat the Quaker instant packs, but I have a bunch of rolled oats, and I want to make some healthy oatmeal without all the additives, etc. in Quaker instant packs. I know you can make it on the stove, but I have no idea how long that takes, or how to do it. Plus, I usually need a quick breakfast, so is there some way to make it in the microwave? Its not the same as instant oatmeal, is it?

I'm assuming you don't have the container? If you do, follow those instructions. I don't have one in front of me, but if memory serves, here's how to go about it.

You can indeed make rolled oats in the microwave, but I usually make it on the stove instead, because it has a tendency to overflow the bowl in the microwave. If you make it in the microwave, use a deep bowl, and put a paper towel under it!

On the stove, you'll heat up water (usually 2 parts water to 1 part oats) to a boil. Once it's boiling, add the oats. Stir frequently until the oats thicken and soften. Takes maybe 5 minutes or less. Once they're done, add a little butter if you like, a pinch of salt, and sweetener to taste. Or omit the sweetener and go for savory oats. Or eat them plain with fruit (or add cinnamon etc etc). If you like them dry, use less water (vice versa if you like them soupy). You can also swap out some or all of the water with milk.

In the microwave it works similarly, but you may have to do the heating up in a few parts, stirring in between. You'll probably also start by adding the oats to cold, rather than hot, water.

You can also always ask Google. It knows all.

If you make it on the stove, do yourself a favor and at least run water in the pot immediately after you've served the oatmeal. That stuff hardens to cement if you let it sit.

I think this is right...

Put the oatmeal in the bowl, add almost double the amount in water, stick it in the microwave for 1.5 min. then turn it, and microwave it for another 30 seconds.

Great things to put in the oatmeal is pecans, sugar, cinnoman, craisans, raisans, or just plain salt without the rest.

yeah i do exactly what infalliblerespuo said. comes out nicely.

Nope, I got the oatmeal in bulk. So no instructions on the container.

All right. I'll try a few different ways. Thanks!

Simple recipe:

160 grams (4 servings, around half a cup) of rolled oats, 2 cups of water, 4 servings of horse radish cheddar cheese, 4 LaTortilla Factory tortillas.

Bring water to boil, add oatmeal, and reduce to simmer. Steer slowly on occasion so it won't burn. Once most of the water is gone steer in the cheese, and mix well. Split in to 4 servings in ziploc bags.

In the morning put 1 serving in to tortilla, wrap burrito style, wrap whole thing in paper towel (prevents drying), and warm in microwave for around 30 seconds.

You can also use less cheese and add cottage cheese or better yet farmers cheese (tvorog).

Old Fashion Oats are just the best!  You will be glad you switched.  They only take five minutes.  For one serving:  One cup water, bring to boil.  Dash of salt (optional).  1/2 cup oats.  Stir at medium heat for 5 minutes.  They are SOOO much better than instant!  Enjoy.    I like to add a few dried cranberries, or other dried berries.

I like to make mine with skim milk for extra creaminess, calcium, and protein.

I usually make it with .75c oatmeal, 1c milk (I like mine thick otherwise you may want  bit more milk). I cook in the microwave for 2-3 min (watch for boil over) then I let it sit and absorb the milk, otherwise you could set the microwave for a really low setting and microwave for a longer period of time. The boil over stinks though if it happens.

I usually "nuke" it in a bowl, then transfer to a container and eat it at work. By then it has absorbed. To re-heat, just add a tiny amount of water, mix and microwave to get to the right temp - creamy once more (as opposed to spackle texture) Laughing

Hmm. So the liquid tends to evaporate? Would I be better of drinking a glass of milk on the side to get all the nutrients, or will the milk just be absorbed by the oats?

it would be the same, only the water out of the milk is evaporated.
