Margaritas may not be vegan...sorry :-(

Quote  |  Reply

Just figured I'd spread the word, because there's likely no way you're going to be able to read the label of your local bar's Sour Mix.

I bartend part time at a restaurant, and I was making Sour Mix the other day. I looked on the label, and noticed there are egg whites in the Sour Mix. Weird, huh? Especially considering the stuff is CLEAR lime-flavored juice!!!

Sour Mix is commonly used in Margaritas, Daquiris, Amaretto Sours (obviously), and many, many specialty martinis.

Sorry guys! Just figured I'd let you know!

Never knew that there were egg whites in it! Am not a vegan but I've never really liked the taste of ready-made sour mixes along with my alcoholic drinks in restaurants and at home. PS there's so much crap in it like HFCS, yellow dye, preservatives and several gum syrups and other stuff acting as emulsifiers.

You only need equal amounts of sugar and water along with some lemon/lime juice and of course, tequila if you are making margaritas. :)

I may just make some this weekend. Been a while since I made some.

Don't bars usually stick the salt to the rim of the glass with egg-white?

I don't know about all bars but the ones I used to work in just wet the rim with water and then put the rim in salt or sugar, depending on the drink.

I have always used water as have all of my friends to wet the rim.

Same as above- the bars I have been to use water to wet the rims. Though if they did use egg white to wet instead, I kind of find that icky and I'd want to know beforehand.

Egg white???!!  Gross, never heard of that.  That seems like a really stupid, pointless and expensive thing to do, not to mention potentially hazardous (salmonella in eggs, egg whites are perishable, etc.).  Most bars use water, or lime or lemon juice to wet the rim of the glass.

Yeah, our bar uses lime juice to wet the rim.

Egg white is something people used to use back in the day to candy things, like violets, for example. But that was before factory farming and all of that made salmonella so prevalent in eggs and so dangerous to use raw.
