Marijuana & Weight Loss
Question- I am a lifelong pot smoker, activist and supporter. I am finding (although this may be obvious to most) that I am usually able to eat perfectly until I smoke pot. At which point I eat all the bad things.
I am wondering are there any ways to curb an intense craving/munchies, or are there foods that are better to snack on? Right now I save about 300 or so cals throughout the day for "munchies"
Some things I have tried are tea, coffee (which helps a bit) and just taking a few things. For instance, last night I put in a small container, a few almonds, a few pumpkin seeds, 3 chips, 3 crackers and a few grapes. That was satisfying too , to have a bit of what I really wanted.
Thank

No reason you should be smoking unless it's medicinal. Quit smoking and you won't have to deal with poor eating.
but you can just go ahead and ignore those :)
this thread might even get locked actually, not sure what the rules are on this...
anyway the only thing i can suggest is to smoke before your big meal for the night. then you feel like you get to satisfy your munchies while eating what you were going to eat anyway!
good advice
and they shouldnt ban this post, im sure there are alot of anonymous pot smokers that are trying to lose weight and participate in this community.
its a fact of life.
and yes, I will ignore those "quit smoking" posts... its a lifestyle choice for me.
I tend to eat more when I drink alcohol, so I can relate where you are coming from. I try to 'pre plan' my snacky foods, as it looks like you are.
I guess it's all a personal choice. Small serving cheerios seem to satisfy my drinking munches. They come in bowls that contain approx 200 cals, they have lucky charms, cheerios, honey nut cheerios, cinnamon toast crunch, pops, fruit loops. It's gotta be pre-portioned or I'll go over the hill. If you have a problem with binging in general, I don't have an answer for you. Another thing that helps is 100 cal bags of popcorn. That's the most 'bulk' for the calories that I have discovered cure munchies.

I don't smoke or drink, but I still feel the need to step in & oppose your advice. If she wants to smoke, let her smoke.
ANYWAY. I think you definitely need to make sure you always have healthier options on hand. What do you usually crave? i.e if it's crunchy stuff, have some veggie sticks on hand or popcorn.
great
thank you
popcorn is my saviour! also any 100 cal packs i love!

This site is about promoting HEALTHY lifestyle choices. It's my understanding that posts can be banned if they promote unhealthy/unsafe habits. Do you really think this is a healthy choice? Drug addiction and lung issues aside, you're admitting it leads to poor dietary habits.
well, you can't eat what's not there, right? assuming that you're smoking at home, your best bet is to control your options before the fact.
now, if you have take-out menus and a disposable income, that's another matter ;)

i agree with your point, perhaps not the best choice, but i believe there are alot of topics on this site that speak about unhealthy lifestyles.
its a matter of perspective on what a healthy lifestyle means. for me, its the path i have chosen. you dont believe you can be a healthy smoker? i workout several days a week, eat perfectly (cept for my "munchies") which I plan for in my calories...
millions die from many abuses each year, food, drug, alcohol.... marijuana hasnt killed anyone since the documentation of its existence. in fact, there are over 2000 medicinal uses for the plant, and it was legal for years in the US.
all i am asking for is help, and im sure many can relate. maybe my post can help others too. when quitting isnt an option, how do you live a healthy lifestyle while still a pot smoker...?
to your point of removing this post b/c it promotes an unhealthy lifestyle a) i am not promoting this, just sharing MY story and questions and b) then we need to remove all the posts about overeating and alcohol and weight loss as these could also be deemed to promote that lifestyle.
i appreciate your position on this. not trying to hurt anyone. just asking for suggestions.
thank
I spent most of my youth smoking pot, and now I am a 23 year old earning more than my parents combined. just to prove it doesn't hinder you at all, only if you let it!
And also, when I was suffering my tooth abscess, the doctor put me on every single pain medication possible, I was nearly on morphine - nothing worked. My partner offered the idea of having a smoke (I haven't smoked it in about 5 years) and the pain was gone.
God bless pot :)
if the thread gets deleted (and it might), it won't be because of health; it will be because it's illegal. but as long as nobody "promotes" pot, you should be fine.
:)
Dangerously hard not to keep going through the whole packet of rice crackers though...
Hey smoke all you want, I could care less. If you want to make the right dietary choices though, seems logical to cut out what's leadind you astray.
Eat some mini rice cakes. They're really good for munchies and low-cal. And maybe Snackwells cookies that way if you crave something sweet you can do it without wasting a bunch of calories. For salty, I would say popcorn for sure! Or baked chips.
I'm a former smoker, with 11 years of chronic (ha) use. I only quit last year due to random drug screening at my job. But.....the munchies is what did me in. I gained 100 lbs in 11 years, whether i blame it on the weed, or the depression issues i had....I don't know how you'd want to categorize the whole thing. But nonetheless...I was not the type of person who could enjoy pot like i may enjoy a cocktail or happy hour on occassion. it was an addiction and i ruined my life. did i smoke excessively due to depression? did i binge eat because of depression? or was it the marijuana? i don't know. it all bleeds together. but since april i've been trying to lose wgt and have lost 45 lbs so far...sometimes i wonder if i could have done that if i was still smoking pot. i don't know.
sorry, not really giving you any advice here! but i agree it should be legalized. though i had no control of it, i know a lot of people who do. I think alcohol abuse is so much more destructive. i can't imagine dieting with smoking regularly. i guess i would advise you to just not have bad stuff around the house, keep healthy choices on hand, like veggies, portion control type stuff. but i remember getting pretty dang creative when high.....I remember eating a whole box of those fiber one chocolate oat bars when stoned. omg. the pain!!! i was soooo sick. way too much fiber at once. i thought i was gonna die!!!!
Honestly I think the stuff should be legalized, cleaned up and taxed.
I liked the advice to smoke before dinner, that's probably your best bet unless of course you have to eat with parents or something. Outside of that go for low calorie stuff that packs a powerful flavor- those tiny rice cakes with hot salsa on them, sugar free black cherry jello with fat free cool whip, smarties sweet tarts, (only 25 cal. a roll) suck on a lemon or lime wedges sprinkled with splenda. Eat a tart granny smith apple before you open up the oreos, the cookies won't taste as good right after the fruit. Since we know you're not really hungry we have to surmise that it really flavor your mouth is after. The trick is to be be clear enough to make these decisions. If you smoke too much in one sitting none of this will matter and you'll do whatever pleases you at the moment.
All that said; it does slow your metabolism way way down and though you're young now and working out isn't a problem, eventually, inevitabley it will damage your lungs. Be Safe and good luck.
If the original poster had said that she got the munchies from drinking, nobody would have gotten into a moral debate. Why do people keep on thinking that weed is soo much worse than alcohol? ugh. Also, a lot more people do weed than most people think. Its just not something you advertise, especially in the workplace because so many people are uptight about it, and think differently of you.
I think your best bet is to plan your snack before, and that its already prepared. Obviously, if you plan to have veggies and hummus, but nothing is prepared or cut up, chances are you'll end up eating chips. Any 100 cal pack of chips or chocolate is cool, or dipping fruit in yogurt, whipped cream (doesn't have that many cals). And keep on saving yourself some calories just for that purpose. You should still have a normal diner (make it a bit smaller), in order to get all your vitamins and minerals.
Lets all remember this post wasn't to focus on the marijuana use, it's to try and get advice on how to cope with very strong cravings.
I wasn't asking everyone's opinion of marijuana use, in fact, I don't really care what anyone else thinks about the way I live MY successful life.
Now that this has become a moral debate the post probably will get locked or removed.
Thank you everyone who posted good tips!
.........I wish some of the users weren't so judgmental.... makes me think twice about posting other issues and expressing my deepest feelings on here.
I agree with alwhite04 just telling yourself no might help, thats normal what I do just normally. But reminding yourself you dont need it or what not. Yeah ok lol I have no clue if I am even making any sence..... Blah
