Martha's Vineyard 21 lbs in 21 days detox program

Quote  |  Reply

I got the book, "Martha's Vineyard: 21 lbs in 21 days" and I'm going out to buy a juicer tonight & some vegetables - probably shop for those tonight or tomorrow, then I may do a 7 day detox (I can't do the full 21 days in all practicality, thanks to it being December) but in January, I am hoping by then my husband will have read the book & will join me in the 21 day detox in January.  That would RULE!

It's an interesting book.  I definitely recommend it !  I received it in the mail (thanks to Amazon.com) last night.  I started it this morning & read it almost completely today.  I'm in the last chapter or so now.  I put it down because I didn't have an adequate way to take notes or bookmark the pages - I was out & about.  So I decided to finish the book tonight when at home when I can post the diet on my cupboard (which is the suggestion) and put the whatever I need to on my calendar...

If I could lose 7 lbs in those 7 days on the diet, that would be GOLD.

Last year around this holiday season I gained about 10 lbs. I do NOT want that to happen to me this year.

If I am really at 175, then if I do this diet, I could get to 155 or 154 in 21 days in January (IF I don't gain any more weight before then!!!) ... that would be my goal!!

Has anyone tried this detox program?  I would love to hear from anyone & everyone regarding any aspect of this...

What exactly have you been ingesting that leads you to think you need to do a detox?

If you do the "detox" diet that says you will lose seven pounds in seven days, you will be losing water weight. You will not lose fat.

You might want to read up on some of the medical literature about "detox" diets, and by medical literature, I do not mean verbiage on web sites extolling detox diets and what you need to buy to go on one.

That's not necessarily true that she won't lose fat... 5 of those 7 lbs will probably be water and food weight, but she could surely lose 2 lbs of fat in 7 days!!!

What all does this diet entail? Is it all liquids? Juice? Like juice fasting??

I havent done Marthas detox, but i did the miracle cleanse last month and loved it and had great results. I tried it to detox (sort my exzema and migraines) and also to kick start my weigh loss after 2 months platued. Result 10lbs in 10days including 2% drop on bodyfat, so it wasnt just water as my scales showed a consistent 56% water throughout, and ive only gained 2lbs back. My exzema is much better and no headaches since.

Guys please just accept this as my opinion and dont start another anti detox debate. Im sure i and the poster are both educated enough to know that any detox is a short term thing and a balance of carbs, protien, fat etc and nutrients are all essential in the long term.

Give your detox a go and good luck.

What is the miracle cleanse and where can you find it?  I have done a couple of detox and it has helped me with headaches and some weight lose.  but I am interested in this one.

fatanr11, no, it will be water weight, and, possibly, some muscle. It's very unlikely that any fat will be lost.

I'm sorry that doesn't fit in with what some people want to believe.

athena - no, it will not all be water weight. Maybe some muscle, but more likely fat. The recommended amount of weight to lose per week is 1-2 lbs. And that is fat right?? Saying a person who burns 3000 just by living starts to eat 2000 to lose. That's a 1000 deficit per day, times 7 = 7,000 calories. One lb of fat = 3500. 3500*2 = 7000. Please verfiy your statement why you can't lose fat during 7 days, ok?

chelsea - I agree w/you - saying detox is like asking to be bashed! sheesh! and I'm glad to hear you had such success with the Miracle diet, and I cannot believe you only gained 2 lbs back! congrats!

According to the Mayo Clinic, "However, there is no evidence that detox diets actually remove toxins from the body. Most toxins in the body are very efficiently and effectively removed by the kidneys and liver and excreted in urine and stool."

fatanr11, sure, the OP could lose two pounds in seven days -- by taking in a reasonable number of calories, say, 1500 or so, and walking three miles a day. Take in too few, and it's not fat that gets burned. You can argue about it if you want, but it's not me you need to argue with -- it's your body and medical science. Have fun with that!

The OP should know though that this poster also thinks drinking lemon juice with pepper in it or whatever is a good idea even though it lacks almost any nutritional value as well.

My advice is go see an actual Dr. or Nutrionist and ask them if they think it's a good idea.

Well said, Archer. I couldn't agree with you more regarding the source.

Isn't "detox program" really just a euphemism for "crash diet"?  And correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't doctors (at least mine) always saying that crash diets lead to yo-yo weight loss/gain patterns and are surefire ways to screw up your metabolism?

So I guess no one has tried this detox program.  That was my original question on this forum - have you tried it?  The answer, apparently so far, is "no."
Lemon in water + pepper?   Blech - that sounds awful.
I lost that much once - when I had Mono and just about couldn't swallow anything on account of the swelling in my throat and running a high fever for a month. I was a week out from being hospitalized for IV feeding when the swelling finally went down far enough that I could swallow something that wasn't soup.

It took me about a year to regain the muscle mass I lost due to this.

hahahahaha!!!    :)    thank you for this post!   :)

hey,

I am on the "detox" diet currently. It's very difficult to follow, but must adhered to strictly. Not only are in intaking a lot of herbal teas and supplements every other hour, on top of the schedule you need to be drinking veggie juice constantly inorder to keep your caloric intake up at a reasonalbe amount. Unless you have the time and ability to do so, I do not recomend doing this or any detox diet. Since you will not experience much "hunger" you really have to monitor yourself. A lot of the "aches and pains" to be expected are a result from too low of a caloric intake. when this happens you body eats away at muscle, but since muscel isn't fully digestable, it leaves what are called keytones (which are molucule with  one electron link missing - inother words free radicals - wich are VERY dangerous both to people who want to lose weight and to those just wishing to live health. )

I would not recomend doing this without a nutritionist or MD watching over the process, and a psychologist for those who are very intent on loosing weight. I say this because with this particular diet it becomes very easy for those who haven't had an eating disorder to fall into those thought processes, and is a down right nightmare for anyone who has had one to do and not fall into "the same old trap"

That all having been said, I have enjoyed the diet a lot. It has been working well for me. I have not been weighing myself, as I am not as interested in the weightloss as I am in it's ability to reduce cravings and kick start a healtheir eating habit.  I did weigh myself once around the 7 day mark and had lost 9 lbs. but IT WAS WATER WEIGHT, as was evident by the shrinking in my facial structures etc. I have yet to see any "fat" disappear. (though my blood pressure has gone down since the diet doesn't allow for my usual 7 tablespoons of salt a day - part of why i chose to do this.)

I work out 3 - 5 times a week and have noticed  a decline in the amount of weight I am able to lift - a bit of a danger sign for those looking to this as the shed XX lbs. scenario. I am able to do cardio (in fact the diet requires excercise) but i do limit it, since the caloric intake is so limited.)

All in all I would say if you decide to go through with this, take note and be aware. It requires not only self discipline, but vigilance and not only about following the diet, but also checking in with thought processes (keeping from obsessing about weight) and also ensuring that you're getting enough calories.

I hope this helps a bit

???  That's not what a ketone is.  Not even close.  Ketones and free radicals are very different things indeed.  The problem with diets in which your body breaks down muscle is that, well, they break down muscle.  That's bad in and of itself.

I read some of the martha's vineyard diet book at the bookstore, besides being difficult to follow because it is so restrictive it is extemely expensive IMO. I juice regularly anyway, but I can't afford to do it everyday. Sure carrots are cheap, but green leafy vegetables which is what you really should juice is pretty expensive given how little yield you get from it. I know someone that did a juice fast for 10 days. It's true you a lose a ton of weight, but they gained it all back when they went back to regular food because they felt so deprived on it. I think she lost about 10% of her body weight in 10 days. The main issue I have with any type of crash diet is that you look like crap when you done. Smaller but your body shape looks like jello. After losing all that weight to look worse then when you started doesn't make any sense at all.
