martial arts

I need some feedback on some different martial arts that you guys might have experience with. I'm looking to get into something that does not involve too much condition and mainly self defense. I've taken kick boxing in the past but it's way too intense for my needs.
Or maybe you guys know a website that describes all the differnet martial arts available and whats involved in learning it
Thanks

Hi there Sublime,

www.martialinfo.com

www.martialarts.about.com

The first one is a Martial Arts information centre, different styles etc and has a school locator, but it's in the US so if you live there...Hurrah!!

The second one is provided by the same provider as calorie count: About.com.

It has free tutorials, another locator, different styles etc. This site seems to have more, the other one looks a bit WWF!! Follow the link from the home page thru browse topics Martial arts styles and you'll have a page with options for the best defensive styles or low impact styles. You'll find something.

I'm from OZ so the reputable places I know of - my brother is accomplished in Kali and Escrima - won't help you much.

Hope this helps.

I have taken a variety of martial arts and I bet you are going to like Aikido.  I am not familiar with madam_captain's links but they are probably a good resource.  Aikido is famous for not involving contact or sparring.  You practice throws and escapes from many different grasps.  It is popular with women, there are many female yudansha out there (black belts.)

I agree with lo_phat ... Aikido is a great way to go and it is virtually all self-defense.  Depending upon the school you attend, if you need "harder" work, you can segue into Aikijujitsu, which involves more strenuous wrestling.  Like everything, you get out of it what you put into it.  As a former 3rd kyu in Aikido and now studying Aikijujitsu (female at age 44), I highly recommend it.  You will, however, need to do SOME conditioning.  A lot of it relies on flexibility, so keep that in mind as well.  Good luck!  :-)
