Is My Math Wrong?

Quote  |  Reply

So, I've been here a little over a month and I did a lot of reading to make sure I understood the burn meter..and I think I've got basic understanding of it.

However, the burn meter's maths and mine to not add up.  Here is my example-

Doing nothing I burn 2400 a day, it tells  me when I do the Burn Meter Tool, ( which I just redid now to make sure ) okay- when I go to my "My Account " page my burn meter tells me I burn 2390- it's just ten less, but already a discrepancy

So, I go with the 2390 and then I do 600 on my bike 2390 + 600= 2990 but that is NOT the top number on my burn meter.  The top number on my burn meter says 2890 which is 100 short.

So, what am I doing wrong, I am not looking at the lower number that tells me what I have burned at each part of my day, I am looking at the TOP number of the burn meter which is supposed to be what I will burn for the whole day, right..my sedentary calorie rate + my bike.

I wonder where those 100 calories went? ( Maybe to my hips hehehe. ) So, am I just so tired and my math is wrong, or is my meter wrong?

Thanks !

I had a birthday and my burn meter went down 10 calories. For every lb I loss my burn meter goes down about 10 too. Remember a smaller body takes less energy to move. Have you had a loss?

When you do exercise you have the amount you burn... your case 600 calories, when you add it, the burn meter does add it, but you have to consider that during that hour you exercised you body burned calories just for existing.  The burn meter doesn't count both. So in you case the hour you were on the bike you burned 600 calories, if you were on the couch, you still would have burned 100 calories... Clear as mud? Perhaps someone can explain better.

No, Tracy, you got it right.  The burn meter automatically takes out the amount of calories you would have burned just existing for that hour.  You don't get double credit for burned calories.  Also, if I adjust my weight up or down the calorie burn also adjusts.

You're doing fine Sereniticat.  Good luck.

Oh, thanking you so much  !  That makes total sense.  I can not believe I never noticed it before !  I should have realized what was going on.   Yes, it would not be fair to get double credit !

I think I need to go over to the Defects challenge and subtract a few !

Thanks for answering so quickly !  And good luck to you too !
