Does it matter if I take my calcium and iron supplements at the same time?

Quote  |  Reply

For some reason I'm always short on these two nutrients. But I've heard that calcium can inhibit iron absorption - or was it the other way round? I'm forgetful as it is; to have to remember supplements twice a day is unlikely to happen. Does it matter if I take my supplements at the same time? How much of the nutrients will be inhibited (if any)?

I know that Calcium can inhibit the absorption of Magnesium, so it's very possible that it can also effect Iron absorption. If you're worried you're not getting enough Iron, take the pills about four hours apart.

If you don't think you'll remember, either get in the habit of taking some in the morning and some at night, or set an alarm for yourself. You'd be surprised how easy it can be to form a new habit like this. ;-)

Also... how do you know you're "short?" Iron is found in a lot of veggies... especially green, leafy vegetables. Try adding some salads, spinach, or brocolli to your diet.

Calcium inhibits magnesium? But my supplement puts the two together to help absorption. Hmm.

I know I'm short because whenever I log my food for the day, the analysis says around 40% RDA for iron and 60% for calcium.
