does it really matter how many calories you eat?
I go to the gym an hour a day, walk everywhere ect. does it matter if i eat over 2000 calories as a 5'8 19 year old female if i want to loose weight? also does it matter how many calories i eat as long as i don't binge on anything, make general healthy decisions and stop right before im full? will i loose weight if i just eat until im satisfied and not full and just keep that up?
To maintain your weight means taking in roughly the same energy (calories) as you use up. To lose weight you need slightly less energy each day... typically 500-700 This chart will help you understand your energy needs. http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html If you're at the gym every day and presumably you're walking around and active in other ways as well then read off the requirement for 'very active'.... Your energy needs will be much higher than 2000 cals, I guarantee.
You will probably lose weight slowly & naturally if you eat sensibly, stay active and make good food choices.
I've been in maintenance mode for a little over a month now and I've maintained my weight by:
I don't count calories more than once a week, but I stay active. A half hour of something everyday (walking, jogging, swimming....) keeps the weight from creeping back on.
Trying to lose: Count your calories and work your butt off. that is how I lost weight. During the last 10lbs I ate over 2000 often, but I worked out harder. I had the energy to burn and my workouts benefited from the extra food. Just make sure you count your cals and don't over estimate your calories burned. It's always about Calories In vs Calories Out. It doesn't matter how much you eat as long as it's less than what you burn.
GI Jane's points about calorie needs are right on. It absolutely does matter how many calories you eat in comparison to how many calories you burn. If the lifestyle choices you described represent an increase in calories you burn or a decrease in what you are eating, you will likely lose weight.
I just wanted to add that some people will acheive a calorie deficit and lose weight easily making the lifestyle choices you described, while other people (like myself) find that they need to actually count the calories.
ETA: I took a look at some of your old posts to see if I could find your weight so I could figure out your burn - at 133 you are very slim already and do not need to lose any more weight. You would be better off focusing on eating a balanced, nutritious diet that meets your energy needs, while working out to improve your general health and appearance.
the thing about exercising and trying to just "eat healthier" is that exercise will make you hungrier and you might not realize you're eating more. It can be frustrating to try to lose weight that way and see slow results when you feel like you are trying so hard. Sure, you can lose weight that way, but counting calories or at least keeping a food log makes it easier.
