Does it matter if I eat right before bed?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 30, 2008 in Weight Loss

My husband is very big into weight loss since he lost over 80 pounds a few years ago.  I am losing weight too for the first time in my life, but he seems kind of all-knowing about this stuff, in a kind of rude way.  Whenever I eat a snack before bed or a late dinner, he tells me it will basically just turn to fat.  I tell him I didn't hit my calorie intake yet, so it's better to eat it late than not at all.  Who's right?

Answer

To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you burn regardless of the time of day.  The body is in a constant state of building up and breaking down fat stores and we burn calories all through the night just to stay alive.  Some people abstain from snacking after dinner as a weight control strategy, but there is nothing magical about it, and many different strategies work.  Avoid snacking before going to bed only if it disrupts your sleep
