Maximum Recommended Sugar intake

Quote  |  Reply

I am trying to limit my total grams of sugar intake and was wondering if there is a general recommendation for the maximum amount of sugar. Thank you

<50g is the usual recommendation.   That doesn't include the natural sugars found in fruit and vegetables.

The minute I see more than 25g sugar I know I went wrong somewhere...  I normally eat veggies and meats. My soy protein bars will normally have a few grams and I believe my fiber one cereal does too. But other than that unless I am eating tons of fruit or cake I don't have more than 15g of sugar in any given day.

Hope that helps!

It just seems like everything has sugar. Soy Milk, fruits, veggies (carrots), etc ...

I will try to keep it under 50. Thanks for the help guys.

Hi Amir,

I read your other post about protein and your genetic disposition to diabetes, etc. I think it would be best for you to try to steer towards unsweetened soy milk or milk subs like Silk's unsweetened light soy milk, or Almond Breeze Unsweetened. For fruit, the sugars found in fruit is digested a little differently than added sugars, they occur naturally (not to say you wouldn't need to limit these as well though). Carrots and some other starchy veggies are high in sugar; but you can look into other veggies: broccoli, celery, peas, edemame, etc these are great sources of protein and also low in sugar/high in fiber.

Try beans too, black beans are superb :).

Good luck!

If anyone's worried about developing Type II diabetes this link to Diabetes UK outlines the main risk factors.   The natural sugars in dairy products, fruit and vegetables do not need to be included in the 50g limit.  Sweetened food like soy milk would be included.
