Mayo Clinic Calorie Expenditure Difference

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone,

Anyone know why the estimate i'm getting at:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/calorie-calc ulator/NU00598

is significantly (500 cals!) lower than what CC gives me in the burn meter?

thanks

I don't have an answer for you but my number was only off by 140 calories...

thanks Alle.

more cals probably means a larger variance Embarassed

It calculates me 320lower then cc....:(
it gives me the exact same number
i put in various weights for my height and got the same cal burn for weights that were 75 lbs apart!  i think the mayo's widget is f'd up.
It puts me at more than CC says...
CC puts me at 2200 for light active, this is without caloric deficit, that put me at 1800.  I'm sticking with CC.
Mayo clinic showed me at 300 more calories burned than CC. I'm going to go by cc too. I've been using those #s and doing fine.

It gives me slightly more of a burn number than the cc calculator does.

However...these are all online calculators...they are not taking into consideration many things.  The best thing to do if you're genuinely curious is to get a heart rate monitor.   Those tend to be the most accurate of all the tools available.

I think what people forget is that all these tools available online are just rough estimates.  They are guides for people to use.  Everyone is different and these calculators can't take that into account, so...base your own deficits and activities based on how your body reacts.  These calculators are fantastic as a starting point.  I notice that I do indeed burn more than the cc calculator tells me...after about a month I figured that out and was able to adjust my intake and exercise.

It put me at 1850 which would be my maintanence at CC.  And it said that's what my caloric needs were, so I assume that if I wanted a deficit, the number would be the recomended at CC of 1450. Shrug, I don't know, but I know what's working and CC is it. :-)
It gives me 1850 as against CC that gives 1900 so I guess both are fine.
CC gives my 1790 Mayo gives me 1800

It's giving me a MUCH lower burn number than CC.  But I am out here in mega heavy land (40+BMI), where the tools don't always work very well.

You need to know your own body, and how your body varies from the norms.  Remember, especially for mega heavies, the tools are simply an estimate.  How your body does is what counts!! Cool

Are you sure you entered your stats right?

There are different formulas to figure out your calorie burn.
Whats CCs?

The Mayo one was based on Harris Benedict Equation.

A more accurate one is the one is based on body fat %.

Another formula is the Mifflin-St Jeorn.

I'm in the mega heavy too (40+ bmi) and it was relatively close, so maybe the stats were entered a little different?

 *EDIT*

This mifflin st jeor site is interesting. What do you all think? I'd like to be my control twin Frown *sigh*

http://www.scientificpsychic.com/health/cron1 .html

It only gave me about 100 calorie difference.
I also got only 50 calorie difference.

CC gave me 1750 calories

Mayo gave me 2000 calories

hmmm....a big difference

Mayo had me burning 50 cals less so that doesn't seem too bad.
Mayo gave me 1800 on sedantary... CC gives me 2150. That's a huge difference! But I'll go along with CC because it's working.
