I don't think it's true that there's chicken fat in McDonald's shakes. But that doesn't really make them any less gross. No, it isn't worth walking in there. If you have to, and when I was in college I did, you can always order a big mac with no meat. The workers will look at you strangely, and it's pretty expensive for a veggie sandwich, but at least you're getting lettuce, tomato and onions.
wow! i never even thought of asking for big mac without meat. good suggestion. Also with their new menu sandwitch items, theres a turkey, swiss and tomato sandwich that is amazing when you ask for no turkey. Have you tried asking for vegetarian meals? normally they try to accomodate.
What about the Apple Dippers (yum), the parfaits, and the fruit and walnut salad?
Some McDonalds have raisins and grilled cheese sandwiches...
Go to: http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.nutri tion.categories.ingredients.index.html
if you have any questions about their ingredients in the things you love....it looks like you're okay with the shakes and the McFlurries....though I'm not sure what all of those things are...google might help...

to satisfy a craving, i've gotten wendy's singles without the meat. it worked to satisfy the craving!
I don't think Mcdonalds has anything meat friendly either. All of their food tastes like cardboard and leaves me feeling sick yet hungry. I haven't eaten there for years. My wife(vegetarian) despises it as well.
garden salad and mustard on the side, carry some splenda packets, grab some pepper and a diet coke....TADAAAA...soooo yummy, Put the splenda in the mustard, mix toss salad in it...and then sprinkle with pepper!
YUM, satisfying...
Im eating it RIGHT now...buy I made the salad myself, and i threw in some salsa too...damn good

It depends on the McDonald's. Some of them, as mentioned above, have fruit 'n yogurt parfaits, ice cream, salads, apples, etc.
I was on a field trip for school and had to go to Micky D's. Well, there were 3 vegetarian things on the menu: fries, tater tots, and a garden salad. I don't trust the fries and tater tots (probably fried in some animal oils) so I got the salad. It was actually pretty good, came with some carrots, tomatoes and cheese (on the side) and croutons.
I doubt they would go as far as to add chicken fat to their Mcflurries. It's probably cheaper to get the standard milk shake machines, which don't pump animal lard into them (thank God). Their shakes contain almost as much sodium as their fries though. Found that interesting. O:
Unless you have to, I'd opt for a better place to eat.

That Big Mac idea is super fantastic. I have these really naughty fast food tendencies every once in while and I'm all over that.
i love the mcFlurries too, but thanks to Cc it showed me that the large flurrie i would eat WITH my fries is a disgusting 900 calories! thats almost my entire days worth, not to mention the 500 cal fries. Sigh... its better just to avoid the whole thing.
In New Zealand McDonald's has a vege burger (or they did last time I was in there, which is a while ago now because I live overseas). Is that only in NZ?
Apsara - Yes, they have veggie burgers here in the states, too, but they are just as high in fat. I don't know WHAT they do to those little patties, but Micky D's always knows how to pack on the fat...
I don't think it's totally vegetarian anyway. Also, forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't the fries fried in animal oil?

Mcdonald's fries used to be fried in beef fat. They switched to vegetable oil a number of years ago so they could advertise that the fries were "healthier". But to keep the beefy flavour they now use beef extract to flavour the fries (before frying). This caused a big uproar last year in India, where Hindus, of course, don't touch beef products.
the mcdonalds "baked apple pie" contains L-cysteine. that's often made from HUMAN HAIR!!!!! or feathers or pig bristles.
*barf*
It is interesting to note that currently the cheapest source of material from which food grade L-cysteine may be purified in high yield is by hydrolysis of molecules in human hair. Other sources include feathers and pig bristles. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cysteine)
and there is beef broth in the fries and hash browns!!!
Edit: "natural flavors from animal sources are found in: premium ranch sauce, newmans own creamy southwest dressing and newman's own ranch dressing.
anchovy is found in: newman's own creamy salad dressing and low fat italian family dressing.
kosher gelatin in in: the snack size fruit and walnut salad and fruit and yogurt parfait.
and of course HFCS is in practically everything *sigh*

-- ignore this, didnt realize i was in the vegetarian section LOL
has anyone tried the new southwestern salad that they offer
I managed to take the chicken out, and it still tasted really good, for a mcDonald's salad...the dressing's even not THAT high-calorie (for a salad dressing, of course)..
of course, not for vegans, cos there's cheese :X

forget about mcdick's. garbage in, garbage out.
find the best falafel joint in town and for a little more than the price of a mccoronary bypass, get some hummus, falafel, pita, olives, rice, potatoes, grilled eggplant, pickled turnip, salad, tahini, tabouleh etc. and wash it down with a mango juice.
then go smoke some shisha with the owner and let him regale you with stories of old mesopotamia.

Dude, I'm a vegetarian. I know. As for Micky-D's and me, you can take the girl out of the trailor park but you can't take the trailor park out of the girl.
something to consider: why would a vegetarian walk into mcdonalds? i suppose if you were a vegetarian for health and not ethics thats one thing, but if you are a moral vegetarian, anything you buy there will directly support the inhumane slaughter of animals, ruin of rainforests and eventual end of the world (jk?). the money you spend on your meatless big mac is not going into the pocket of the person who made it, its going to further the enterprise of mcdonalds, to make the corporations who use inhumane animal slaughter as a way to control and profit from the harm and death of animals, humans and the environment.
just sayin.

And yet, if you are veggie for health reasons, McDonalds is the last place on the planet you should ever step foot in. I don't care if it's with or without meat, there is nothing in that place that is marginally good for you.
*shudder* You couldn't make me eat anything from McDonalds if my life depended on it!

thea8 - I'm a vegetarian and agree that even going into McDonald's (yuck!) does only feed money into their pockets, but from the standpoint of having 4 very active kids and more than a full-time job, fast food is unfortunately a staple for many of us that simply don't have time to even make it home before sports practice and games (we have it every night of the week, sometimes 4 a day with 4 sons!), much less time to cook. I love to cook and do it as much as possible, but time constraints are a big reason that we rely on places like mcdonald's (which I personally disliked even before I was a veg, and now the thought makes me sick!). But unless there are fast food chains out there that cater to vegans and vegetarians only, it's inevitable for some of us to rely on fast food chains when the occassion rises. Although I try to avoid McD's as much as possible, me stepping foot into Taco Bell, Wendy's, BK, Chick-fil-a, etc. is just as bad as the rest, I guess a necessary evil for some of us. I do sometimes prepare meals ahead of time, but we only have so many hours in a day and somedays it's almost impossible to get it all done. But as I've heard others post, whatever we can do personally in the fight against animal cruelty and saving our environment is a step in the right direction. I have one child that became a vegetarian with me and it makes me feel good that him and I are doing our part, even when we have to make the choice to support a fast food restaurant, really any non-veg restaurant for that matter! Good point that you make, it's just not so easy for some of us.
