Measuring activity levels using a pedometer

Quote  |  Reply
I have always wondered if I have my activity level set correctly on the site so I did some research on how to find out how active I really am.

I found this information on the web in several places and they seemed to be fairly reputable sites...

It says to wear a pedometer and do what you always do for a week.  Average it out to find your average number of steps per day.  (I wouldn't include my exercise in this - I would log that separately, but that's just me - if you include your exercise, then you don't get to also add it in manually on the activity log as your higher activity level would already account for your exercise)

Use your average number of steps per day to determine your activity level:

<5000 sedentary

5000-7499 low active

7500-10,000 somewhat active

10,000-12,499 - active

>12,500 - highly active

In looking at the CC categories, they only break it down into 4...so you would have to correlate those numbers into what category you would fit into...something like.....(and I'm no expert, just offering what I think....)

sedentary <6000

light activity 6000-9000

moderate activity 9000-12000

very active 12,000+

What do you think?  I would really like to have a way to get some idea of how active I am because I really think I am underestimating my activity level and should be eating more. :)

i think you have cracked it!!! 2,000 steps is a mile, and so 10,000is just around 5 miles a day. i think this is the perfect way to show activty level, and going by your estimations. Im on light actvty, as i wak 6,000 steps at work!! then the rest of the day i walk too so prob ending at 9,000, poss 10,000. thank you for this! i think you should post this to Eric as a idea for C.C!

p.s i was getting so Frustrated about activty level, but you have solved it for me!
Would you mind if i linked this from my profile??

In Japan a pedometer is called manpo-kei or "10,000 step counter." The idea being that you should walk 10,000 steps every day for good health.
