measuring pasta

Quote  |  Reply

I know 2oz dry spaghetti is about 210 calories... so how does that translate after I cook it???  (meaning I'm making a lot for a family so I can't only cook 2 or 4 oz)

thank you.... i know it's kindof a dumb question :)

When  I make pasta for multiple people I measure how much I make dry (say 6 ounces) then after I cook it I figure out what portion I have on my own plate just by eyeballing it.  So, if I have 1/3 of the 6 ounces then I estimate I have 2 ounces (210 cals).

Some items say how much they weigh cooked on the box by the serving size. You can also look up spaghetti, cooked on this website.

I've measured several different kinds of pasta (spaghetti, rotini, egg noodles, etc) before and after cooking, and they are all almost exactly double once cooked - so 2 oz uncooked = 4 oz cooked.

does anyone know how many cups that is???

I don't have a food scale.  Would you say 2 oz dry = 1/2 c cooked? or 1 c cooked?

I thought this was a good question!!!  I have wondered the same thing.  It helps to know that it doubled. Thanks!

Didn't realize you don't have a scale - you probably should invest in at least a cheap one - Walmart has the cheapie spring loaded kind starting at $5 - that's what I used for almost a year before finally getting a digital - and in comparing it for larger quantities of food, it was surprisingly accurate - but not good for measuring really small quantities of like 20g or less.

Anyway, 4 oz cooked is a lot more than you would think - it fills the 8 inch plates I use (not heaping of course), but I would guesstimate 2 cups???

I don't have a scale either. When it comes to pasta I make the whole box and then separate it into equal single serving sizes depending on how many estimated servings are in the box. I store the individual serving sizes in sandwich size ziplock bags for easy access.

That's a close enough estimation for me and much easier than trying to figure out how much a serving size of dry pasta is, especially since not all pastas are the same size and shape.

1 cup cooked, or 140 grams = 220 calories.  Just type in "spaghetti, cooked" into the search box.   140 grams = 4.9 ounces

 2 cups = 280 grams = 2 servings = 440 cals   Tongue out

Pasta is notoriously hard to measure.  I weigh out the dry pasta because you never know what the volume will be when you cook it.  It really depends on the shape and how much liquid it absorbs.  Also, softer pasta will be a larger volume than al dente pasta.

A cup of cooked spaghetti looks a lot different and bigger than a cup of cooked large shapes like rigatoni or shells.

My Salter digital scale weighs accurately within 5 grams or 1/4 ounce.

hey ive made a post about this before.  id recommend this website ->
