Measuring Water Consumption

Quote  |  Reply

I've been reading several threads regarding water consumption and weight loss, constipation, etc.  I drink lots of liquids - coffee, milk, tea,  but not much over 24 oz of water a day.  Question is this - how do you measure the water content of foods?  I know they count as water intake.  Yes, I know watermelon has more than a cracker...but seriously, what about other foods? Should I just ignore them?

It's actually pretty simple. The difference between the total weight you ate (see your food log) on a given day and the combined weight of carbohydrates, protein, and fat, is roughly the amount of fluid you have consumed. There will be some discrepancy with foods that are weighed dry and then boiled such as pasta and rice but nothing too difficult to figure out.

Personaly (and I could be wrong... try google) I dont think most food is going to contain enough water to be effective. You would honestly just be better off to drink 8 glasses a day.

Of course things like coffe and tea would count toward that.

What I do because I hate water so much is drink one Smart Water bottle (counts as 4 glasses) then through out the day drink 2 cups of tea and two cups of coffee.

If you're trying to measure water in foods you are too hung up on the counting and not enough on the drinking. It's easier to drink more than to eat "wetter" foods.

Also, if a lot of your 24oz is caffinated, you're losing some due to diuretic affect.

You really should try to find ways to drink more throughout the day.

I bought a 36 oz bottle from Walmart and just try to drink at least one before going home for the day  from work and I find it works pretty well (then I just have a glass with dinner). I believe 64 oz is the number to hit buuuut...that's what I was told when I was pregnant, so it could be lower. :) Anyway, they have smaller and larger bottles as well as bottles with the measurements listed on the outside so it takes all the guessing out of it--which is what I struggled with. What do they mean, glasses? All my glasses are different sizes! :)

Oh, I just read on about.com to find the oz you need, take your weight in lbs and divide by 2 and that gives you the oz--but wait. 20% of your water will come from your food, so don't have a heart attack yet. :) So mine is 175/2=87.5*.2=17.5. Then 87.5-17.5=70 oz.  So I get close, at least. Also, you have to add water when you work out.

There's just really no way to get around drinking water. :) Add Crystal Light, lol. Basically, you aren't probably going to get close to your intake by just eating high-water foods.
