My neurologist has put me on a new preventative medication, previcid?, and I've gained about 9 pounds in 8 weeks. I've asked the physicians and they don't have any solutions. Has anyone out there found something that helps with medication related weight gain. I've lost over 50 lbs and I don't want to put it all back on! I'm still eating healthy and exercising even more than before, but I'm putting on weight.
I had the same problem with sandomigran. I gained about twenty five pounds in the year I was taking it. After awhile I couldn't deal with the side-effects and stopped. The good news is, the weight came off afterwards without any conscious dieting on my part. So you might just have to live with it for now.
I eventually controlled my migraines without any drugs at all, by giving up wheat flour and other pulverized grains. I can still eat brown rice, meat and veggies, and I'm happy with the results. It seems like a harsh kind of diet, I know, but I'd much rather be headache free.
Did your doctor put you on prevacid to prevent migraines? Prevacid is a drug to treat heartburn and Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) It is not commonly prescribed for use to treat migraines. If you take a lot of over-the-counter medications such as advil and tylenol it may have been prescribed to you to prevent stomach problems associated with non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS, advil, tylenol and aspirin are NSAIDS) In clinical trials for Prevacid, almost 4000 people took the drug and about 4% reported diarrhea. The other side effects were abdominal pain, nausea and constipation. Weight gain is not considered a side effect of Prevacid. If you have recently been gaining weight I would probably look into other areas such as eating habits, fluid intake and exercise habits. If you do not know why your doctor prescribed the medication to you, you need to call and find out exactly why. I am a paramedic and I consistently see people taking medications that they are not sure why they take. It is essential that you know why you are taking prescribed medications.
