Meds kill my appetite
I just started a new medication recently and it has had a very positive effect. It had a major side effect though-- it basically kills my appetite for 6-8 hours after taking it. Due to the nature of the med I have to take it in the morning. And because of the main positive effect, I do not want to change it soon. So basically I have been eating breakfast, then taking it, and then I can't eat until 4pm or even dinner time (the thought just makes me feel sick).
I am a bit worried about my health and I'd like some suggestions..what would you do? I used CC to lose weight in the past, and I am very familiar with counting calories and nutrients..but I am usually a fan of eating many small meals throughout the day and instead I now have to eat breakfast and a big dinner only, and MAYBE a late night snack. So much for my fat free milk in the fridge..
I can start taking extra vitamins I guess..has anyone been in this situation before?
Yes. I've been in that situation before. You can eat during the day, it just isn't as much fun as it should be. You know what you have to do. Make a lunch that is calorically dense and easy to eat, and eat it at lunch time. The side effects of your meds will probably ease up a bit in a few weeks, but until then just try to power through.
And if you know calories and nutrients, you know that a vitamin can't make up for lunch.
EDIT: Since it sounds just like what happened to me, I'm assuming you're on a similar medication that I am on. If you're on something different, that would make you literally throw up your lunch or something, this wouldn't apply. But if it's just your appetite, appetite is not necessary for eating and staying healthy.
I'm currently having the same problem. I feel like I'm going to throw up any minute, especially after eating. I'm supplementing with Slim Fast. That's what I did when dealing with the stress of my marriage break up.
Seriously! Ladies! Please tell me what this magical medication is! I would kill to be on a medication that makes me not want to eat instead of the current meds i'm on that make me CRAVE food! (Maybe they'd counter act each other!)
hehe...I didn't mention the medication or what it is for specifically because I knew some people would have that reaction bittenkitten...
unfortunately because of the nature of these types of medicines, if you take it WITHOUT having the condition that it is prescribed for then it can really mess you up. That's probably why the weight loss industry hasn't jumped on it.
What you can do is talk to your doctor though..ask if there are other meds you can take that don't make you crave like the ones you are currently on.

I'm on this medication too. Or a similar version. And yeah, my appetite has gone awol.
To keep my intake up I have been getting in a big breakfast. I have found that I can eat fruit without feeling nauseus so I eat the more calorie-dense ones like banana and papaya. Maybe dried fruit would be ok too but I haven't tried it yet.
Try out different things to see what your stomach can handle. For me, I can't handle eating meat while the meds are in effect. I made a burger the other day and got through about 3 bites... ugh.
Good luck!
