Meeeeaaaan Food!!!

Quote  |  Reply

I just checked a few foods and saw that a watermelon, a whole one, has 1355 calories!!! WHAT?!? I always thought that a watermelon is basicly...water! Are there more kinds of food like that, that have way more calories than you would expect? I´m shocked...

It's a fruit, and fruits are loaded with sugar.  So that amount of calories doesn't seem unreasonable at all.

And who could possibly eat an entire watermelon?

Bread and potatoes (without added fat) always surprise me by how many calories they have.  I grew up thinking that it was only the toppings that were fattening, it has been an education to weigh/log plain jane starches and discover that they are actually pretty high all on their own.  Doesn't stop me from eating them and loving them, but I am more careful than I used to be.

To be fair, a whole watermelon is pretty darn enormous!  There must be something like 20 servings per watermelon.

a 16 pound watermelon has that many calories.  That's A LOT of food, and 1355 seems pretty reasonable.  To put it in perspective, 16 pounds of white bread would have 19339 calories.  But, again, who would eat that much (256 1oz slices of bread)

This is why I don't eat fruit: way too much sugar which loads on the calories! I'd rather use calories on beautiful pieces of salmon!

The food that I am shocked about though is granola! In a measly 1/4 cup... there's like 200 + calories! How crazy! --- Which is why I don't touch that stuff either - ha ha.

Just because something has a lot of calories doesn't mean it's bad for you. Bleh - can't imagine trading fruit for salmon. And besides, all food groups are important. Fruit contains nessessary nutrients, and even the sugars in fruit provide great energy for active people like myself and many others using this site. And as was mentioned before - are you honestly going to eat the WHOLE melon? Not likley.

I can imagine few things more satisfying on a hot, sunny summer day than biting into a cold, juicy slice of watermelon.

You can't just not eat fruit...it provides sooo many nutrients...vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, fiber...i can go on and on. yea, it has sugar, but seriously, a standard piece of fruit has about 20g sugar and 80 cals for 6-8oz of it. 6-8oz is A LOT, that's up to a half a pound. its not a very a calorie dense food. but jus like any healthy food (like lean meat, fish, grains, etc.) too much will eventually lead to excess calories.

don't cut out fruit. thats really stupid.

Totally agree with you here, Zebulancherry. I'd pick fruit over salmon any day.

Did you check an actual serving of watermelon? Honestly, who eats a whole freaking watermelon?

And "mean"? Uch. 2 cups of diced watermelon is 80 bloody calories. Save the spaz for something that warrants it like the Cheesecake Factory's menu.

Face it folks.  None of us got fat by eating too much fruit.

I agree with you guys totally. And like you said Clarie, fruit's not what makes people fat. Hahah. If we were totally "as we should be" and were still in the Garden of Eden, all we'd eat would be fruits, veggies, and nuts!

I love fruit and salmon, I dont love one more than the other. Each of them have their time turning the day to shine in the spotlight, or sit in my tummy however you want to look at it. Fruit has natrual sugars that are fine in moderation. I wouldnt eat a whole watermelon, I think Id pee myself to death. aha

No buddy eats an entire watermelon! Not even in a watermelon eating contest! I love fruit! Fruit is wonderful. People shouldn't cut it out of their diets based souly on the sugar content. There are far to many vitamins and other nutrients in fruits that we need! I agree with zebulancherry in the fruits, veggies and nuts thing. I don't think I'd mind that diet!

Actually fructose (the sugar you get from fruit) is a better sugar than say sucrose (table sugar).  I'm not a chemist or a doctor but I'm pretty sure that in 9th grade biology I learned that fructose is less likely to be stored (it's easier to break down).  Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Point is: DON'T GIVE UP FRUIT!!

Addendum: Yes fruits are high in calories because of their sugar  content, but it's easier to work off those calories and the other benefits (vitamins, fiber) from eating fruits should outweigh the extra calories.

I guess someone could eat a whole watermelon in a full out binge. One thing would be certain though, they would be peeing and peeing for hours. Ha Ha.

I've eaten an entire watermelon!  We cut it up because we were having guests over.  Too bad they didn't get to have any! I ate the whole thing in the course of a few hours, and vomited the entire night. I haven't wanted watermelon since--but it is in fact possible.  :)

Well I guess you learned to eat food in moderation after that. Dont work the watermelon wont bite back the next time you eat it just as long as you dont eat all of it.

i actually did it a lot of times to (haha) save calories when im hungry... insteat of eating bread or so. now i know better. But i totally agree with most of you, that you can´t just stop eating fruits. that wouldn´t be smart or healthy...

If I ate fruit for every piece of junk food I ate I'd probably be a healthy weight right now, haha.

Oh and I loooooooooooooove watermelon. It's one of my favorite fruits! It's so juicy and so nom nom! A huge melon lasts almost a whole month in the fridge. I'm sure if I wanted to, I could eat an entire melon quite easily. :o Never have though... yet.

Just have some salmon for dinner (with some sort of side dish) and then watermelon (cut in cubes and eaten with a toothpick) for dessert! Mmmmm.
