Men always have it easier

Quote  |  Reply
I am doing the south beach diet along with my boyfriend. I thought it would be a great idea because we can support each other and stop each other from cheating, which it really has. But he is loosing weight SO much more quickly then I am. Its so frustrating. His pants keep getting bigger and mine still are the same. This morning I weighed 3 more pounds then I did 3 days ago...what the hell I haven't cheated once!! I am getting my period in two day so could that be the problem? ( I'm on B.C. so I know exactly when I will get it) Its just not fair. GRR

Life's not fair. :)

Not to be overly contrite, but we do the best we can. :) Keep doing the right things.. eat well, exercise, and the weight will come off. And don't worry about comparing yourself with others. It'll be eaiser for some, harder for some. That's just the way of it. As long as you're doing your best, that's really what matters.

Like that sunscreen song says.. you're only racing against yourself :)

And yes, that time of the month does tend to mean some random weight gain. It goes away after.
Look on the bright side. They put the weight on ALL in their stomaches hehehe. At least it spreads all over for us. :)
^^^ so true.

its the exact opposite in this house. not that im complaining...
but he is!

Yeah, but men are cursed with the Unibrow and bald spots. It's all about perspective... ;)

Our bodies are made differently (obviously...haha)...and it is harder for us to loose weight, or at least a slower process.  And you can't compare apples to oranges!

Use each other for support and continue on....

Look on the bright side.....statistically we live longer ;p
Men tend to be born naturally with more muscle mass then women and of course, muscle burns more then fat. So their metabolisms are much faster then womens and yes they will lose weight faster. Ugh...sucks doesnt it? :P :/
I started CC at the end of June. My husband has been supporting me all the way and kind of following along with it. I have been cooking healthier dinners, he has been watching his portions, packing healthier lunches. He has not counted any calories at all. Well, he has lost about 30 pounds! Not that I am complaining, getting rid of the slight belly and slimming down I like what I am seeing! It's funny how most men can take on anything in a casual way and have success with it.

Well, women typically survive famines better than men... you know, must repopulate and such....

Guess that's a bright side.

I hear you Jenna, it's not fair.  Plus they get to pee standing up, almost anywhere they want..... lol

Granted, peeing standing up is one up on the ladies..

...However, weight loss and Calorie Counting for men is hard too. I'm watching every single thing I eat and drink and am on 1750 kcals a day, plus I exercise 6 days a week, 2 hours at a time. It's hard work.

I'm slowly but surely losing weight - but, there are times when my I can gain pounds overnight or don't lose at all, along with the days when I can seem to lose for no reason at all.

Plus, boys have to deal with all the temptation, frustration, hunger and heartache that girls go through too.

OK, boys don't have to deal with menstrual cycles so I can't compare there. But I do agree with the previous post - don't compare too much to others. It's just hard regardless of who you are....

It's not viewed as well for a guy to watch what he eats.  I remember hearing a girl once say that she thought the guy she had just gone on a date with was gay because he ordered a salad for dinner.  Personally I still eat what I want (usually not a salad), just in smaller portions.  However, while my bmi is only slightly overweight, people are always asking me why I'm dieting. I'm still overweight.

P.S.  ben_park, you may be overdoing the exercise.   You shouldn't spend more than 45-60 mins working out (either cardio, weights or the combination).  You will see diminishing returns the longer you work out, and you may even decrease your muscle size over time since you're in a catabolic state while you're working out, and it doesn't seem like you're giving your body enough rest to repair the muscles.

starffy,

I do cardio 30 min and weights for about 30 mintues 3 times a week - 2 days a week i just do 30 of cardio.

Would this be putting me in a catabolic state?

Just seems like you're very knowledgeable....

My boy just needs to think to himself that he wants to lose half a stone and its gone! seriously! He is magic.
FWIW, peeing standing up is no longer exclusively masculine, thanks to a few Australian geniuses... ;)
While I'm not Starffy...

Nah, Megrox - that's still only an hour total in one session, which is fine. As long as you do the weights first, that is - you generally get better results when you do the cardio last. If you absolutely must do cardio, that is - weights done right burns 57% more calories than cardio does, so long-term it's more effective to expand the weights and cut the cardio.

And listen to Spirochete, she knows the Way :-P

well thank you!

Yeah, I do 5 minutes of cardio warm up, 30 minutes of weights/strength and then about 25-30 minutes of cardio at the end.

I hope I'm on my way to success!

Yeah, that's not too much. It will put you in a catabolic state (as will any weight training program).  Catabolism is merely the state in which your body is breaking down body tissues and components, which is necessary for building muscles.  But if you don't give your body enough time to rest and recuperate (and your workout schedule looks fine for this), your muscles won't be able to rebuild and grow.

Men don't ALWAYS have it easier but when it comes to losing weight then yes, they do. My man eats almost twice what I do (we list each other's lunches after work to compare, it's more of a joke but seriously that guy eats 2-3 what I could at lunchtime) and he can still lose weight. Men are just built to put on muscle at the mere twitch of a finger and that helps them burn the fat better. They also have a different hormonal set up that isn't geared toward fat depositing like our is. It is infuriating to know that that piece of cheesecake we're sharing fits comfortably into his day's calories but completely blows mine, even if I eat less.

Unfortunately for them though, men don't have anywhere to store fat where it looks ok. Manboobs and lovehandles are not as forgiveable as big boobs and a round butt on women and men can never claim having children made them fat (poor yes, fat no)

It's just a fact that men lose faster than women but then fatter people lose faster than thinner people and taller people can eat more than shorter people. Weightloss should never be a competitive sport. It's a personal thing with your own goals and achievements and comparing with another (even of the same sex) is pointless, really. You gain nothing but anxiety and disappointment.

One thing I really do hate though is when guys turn up and say "rrar, look at me, bulging muscles, lost oodles of pounds and you can do it just like me. No dieting just exercise a lot." (my boyfriend used to think you need only exercise a lot). that kind of advice  makes me want to slap them. Go away. You're a man and you know nothing about losing weight if you're a woman. Come back when you've got enough oestrogen in your system to give you cellulite and the monthly appetite of a bear before hibernation and then come talk to me

I think it was an eye opener for my boyfriend when we go cycling together. We're doing the same miles, at the same speed for the same length of time. I eat less than he does and yet whenever we get back home, I can guarantee a weight gain where he shows none. He also doesn't fluctuate anywhere near what I do.

My brother stopped drinking soda and lost 40 pounds.

My uncle tells me he goes for a small 20-minute walk at lunch and loses weight.

My father cuts out half of his "Second breakfast" (his words), which means he has only one donut instead of two midmorning, and he loses weight. He still eats his cookies and potatoes and pasta, mind you. Sometimes he even goes over to the ice-cream shop and gets a banana split so he doesn't get too skinny!

My boyfriend eats chips and cookies and soda and all kinds of take-out nearly every day and is as skinny as a rail. I swear, in a skirt, he would have much sexier legs than I do!

The men in my life always tell me, "It's so easy! Just cut back a little and work out and BAM you're skinny!" IT'S ALL LIES!! LIES I TELL YOU! This sort of advice of course left me feeling totally in despair, especially when I was younger, because it ISN'T that easy, and I felt like I was failing when it worked for them but not for me. It even led to me having disordered eating and compulsive exercise; I could "cut back a little and work out" more and more and still see no changes in my body.

So yes, when it comes to losing weight, most men have a major advantage.

With all that being said, you women still have what us men want!!!!
