MEN, 18+, 5'10-6'2, WHAT IS an IDEAL WEIGHT OR WHAT IS GOOD WEIGHT? NEED SOME HELP FROM ANYONE WHO KNOWS THE IDEAL WEIGHT!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi there, my name is Michael, i am 24yo male, I started my journey at 310lbs, I am currently 270lbs, I am 185cm/6ft'1, and I need to know what weight I SHOULD BE, for my height, I am also considered big built by my doctor and by the build test.

I beleive perfect weight for me is 200lbs, the BMI scale is way out as it does not take into account for build and bone structure.

IF anyone is a male of similar age and height, or knows anyone of similar stats i would like to have a rough idea of ACTUAL FACTUAL information to tell me what weight i should be, i want to get down to 195-200lbs in the next 6months.

PLEASE ANYONE WHO HAS ANY PROFESSIONAL OR EXPERT OR REAL LIFE KNOWLEDGE OR INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO MY QUESTION, I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU ALL

The BMI charts are somewhat less than helpful at the extremes, it's a good first pass for health guidelines and for assesing risk, but body fat percentage is more useful once you get closer to your goal weight.

What's a perfect weight for you you'll only be able to tell once you're closer to your goal; don't stress it at this point. Also, be aware that losing 70lbs in the next 6 months may not be doable; especially if you've got more muscle mass than the average. There is a specific biochemical limit to how much fat can be liberated from fat storage per day (31kcal/lbs fat mass d) and exceeding that will cost you lean mass. Since your goal is to minimize loss of muscle mass while maximising fat mass, you'd do well to keep this in mind.

You may in fact find that 200lbs is too low a goal weight for you; even with a 40% fat mass at your starting weight you had 186lbs of lean mass. Assuming you keep that intact with a sensible diet and training regime, you will be at 7% body fat at 200lbs, and that's a very low level; most people are more comfortable and healthier at somewhat higher than this.

melkor, thanks for the quick response.

First of all i would like to know how you are able to conclude that i have 40% body fat at 310lb starting weight?

Also I am big built in size/bone structure not so much muscle, unless that is underneath! LOL.

I am judging by other post's such as BigBrett, he was 320lbs and he is now 185lbs and we are both similar height.. he looks good besides the obvious bit of left over skin.

I am just unsure where i should be aiming, I am currently 270lbs and i know pysically i need to loose at least another 40lbs off my stomach, and more of other areas, legs & arms and buttocks.

My immediate goal is to get down to 220lbs which is just under 100kg in Metric terms-as I am australian,

I want to be able to say I am under 100kgs as that is a big milestone first of all!

you may be right, i might be better suited at 220lbs or even 210lbs, but most guys around my height have got down to 185-200lbs and look good without looking too lean of course. I plan to after getting below 220lbs, to then tone up more so that i can convert the new body into more toned and better looking maybe even gain abs one day! this is all part of my long term goal of course which could take up to 12months to get right down to where i need to be.

would love to hear more from anyone who has any information.

That was just a WAG, really - 40% BF is extreme. Even when you do absolutely no exercise whatsoever 18% of any weight gain comes as muscle; I just picked 40% as the very high end of what's theoretically possible.

Anyway - something sensible like like Starting Strength for your strength training, and then do as much walking, biking, swimming or elliptical as you have the time for; don't worry about the HIIT stuff until you're down where you can see an ab ;)

6'2, 197 lbs, 16 % body fat.  Pretty "large" build.  I dunno if that's "ideal" but it's reasonably comfortable for me.

Down from 250 lbs at heaviest, 188 at lowest.  Agreed, the BMI is a decent approximate starting guide, but not necessarily the standard to shoot for.

I hate this idea of "ideal weight".

I don't know that Ideal weight is BMI- I am 5 ft 2, 180 lbs (alot I know) but it tells me I should be 110!  To me, that is way too thin.  For 6ft, I would say about 210ish would be good, and if you tone up it will look fine and feel great I'm sure.  You should get to the weight you feel comfortable with/happy about yourself.  :o)

I'm 20, 6'3" and weigh 220 lbs. My BF% is 19% (I just got underwater tested)....I was down to 203 at one point and I still really wasn't happy.

But that's not because the number, it's your composition. You can be 250 and have lean muscle and look great or 200 with no muscle and look horrible. Be concerned with what you look like, not what the scale says.
