Will menopause cause weight gain?
Asked by nanamoss on Sep 29, 2008 in Weight Loss

Answer

Hormonal changes from menopause are responsible for depositing fat around the middle, but research shows that hormones are not the primary reason for weight gain. On average, women gain one pound a year during the menopause decade, but it’s mostly because they exercise less and don’t adjust their eating habits. What causes them to overeat is a complex issue. To prevent weight gain, boost your metabolism through aerobic exercise for 30 to 60 minutes on most days of the week. Increase your calorie requirements by building muscle through strength-training 2 to 3 times a week. Read about preventing middle age spread from the Guide to exercise at About.com.
