perhaps im looking a bit to far ahead , just wondered if anyone could give me some knowledge. I cant quite remember what mine was like prior ed all i know i ate what i wanted them were the days :). with having this illness for 14 years will my metabolism still beable to return to it normal capacity ? i know im not weight restored yet but i just wanted to try and think whats ahead . i guess i have the same worries as most on here that i will return to a normal weight and i wont be able to eat alot , or if i do ill keep gaining. im 5 10/11 people have told me i will need more as im tall is this true ?and that i may need to look for a higher bmi any ideas welcome
helen you should stop trying to pre empt this stuff. its all still very focused on controlling your weight. who cares what sort of metabolism you have. you'll need to eat what ever you need to eat to maintain your weight.
what you should be focusing on is what your goin to do when you are weight restored. you need to put something in the space that the ed and concentration on recovery occupies. there is a danger when all is well on the physical front that you will feel great emptiness without something to place in this void. concentrating on silly things like metabolism will further the obsession and caus you to become obsessive. why dont you plan things like doing a course or upskilling in some way. joining some sort of club or finding an aftercare group
I recommend messing with your metabolism by eating food from another country while you're studying or teaching there and fulfilling your dreams! Write about everything you see and take pictures and sketch, enjoy the cuisine and gain weight and be perfect and fill that hole that is now completed by the ED. How about Greece? Or Spain? Healthy foods, use of olive oil, good for your body, good for enjoying, good for CULTURE and everything else.
Find something to put in the place of the ED.
I think Chrissy1988 posted something about being proof that metabolism can be restored. ;-) It can be. You can do it. Now make a batch of brownies for pete's sake and then go and find something that you can do when you don't have to be slowed down by the ED!
Helen I totally get how you feel right now!! I can't stand the uncertain future surrounding my body, weight, etc. Heck I can't stand an uncertain future period.. I can totally relate to your fear of having to eat a small amount when you reach your goal weight. I'm exactly the same way! Ideally, your metabolism should speed up after awhile. You just gotta give it time. :-) You've made tremendous progress so far! I know this is easier said than done, but try not to focus on it now. I think your first priority now is to keep gaining. You'll cross that bridge when you get there. Good luck!!!!![]()
wow 14years... i can only imagine. ive had ED 2.5 and its been a living nightmare.
im not sure about the metabolism but im pretty sure it shouldgo back to normal rate once the weight is gained?
try not to think too far ahead... i take one day at a time with gaining, otherwise i panic and find it all too overwhelming and cave in again to the old habits.
als.
There's no need to worry about this now, Helen... what will be will be!
For what it's worth I had EDs for 5/6 years and my metabolism is on the faster side of normal now. My friend in NZ who recovered after 30+ years of anorexia also has a normal metabolism. Honestly I think people, especially those with EDs, pay way too much attention to metabolism.
Why do we think our bodies are so incapable of adjusting? After all, our bodies have survived despite how we tried to destroy them. Despite the strange, cruel and dangerous methods we used during our illnesses our bodies still carry us through the day. If our bodies can survive through all the crap we put them through... of course they can adjust back to eating a normal amount of food. After all that is the natural and ideal state for our bodies to be in - makes sense that our bodies will work best once we give them normal conditions to function in!
thanks everyone for your helpful comments h x
Everyday I worry about the X weight I may be or when I am at a healthy weight calorie needs etc I remind myself to stay in the day. Regardless of the future it does not change what you need to do today. The worries of the future may not happen and if they do it may not be as you feel. What can you do today to be healthy?
will metabolism always recover?

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
