Where can I get it done? And what do they do?

My doctor doesn't do it (I still go to a pediatric clinic and they don't do that kind of stuff, I guess!) and I just have no idea how to go about finding a good place.

Thanks for any help =)

A couple years back when I joined Bally Total Fitness, they had a complimentary package that included a metabolism test.  Basically you put a device in your mouth and breathe as your normally would for about a minute, and from that they calculate how much you normally burn in a day.

That's all?  Is that the most accurate kind of test, do you think?

And, sorry for all the questions, but do you have to join Bally to get that done?

That's all there is to it.  I think it's pretty accurate as long as you breath as you normally would.  Perhaps you could look into some sort of heart-rate monitor as well?  I think those typically tell you what your heart rate is while working out and let you know how many calories you burned in the work out, but I'm not sure how accurate they are when you're not actively exercising.

I'm not really sure if you have to join Bally, maybe find one near you and call to ask?  Be careful about signing any agreements though, they're known to trap people in three-year contracts >_<.

Oh jeez haha...yeah I don't think I could really sign a contract anyways since I'm only 17..So I may be off the hook there!

I would LOVE to buy a heart rate monitor (I am considering the Polar F6) I just need to find one and kick my butt into putting out the money.  I'm a known penny-pincher =P

I would have thought they would have had to measure BF% and all that to figure it out..but I guess not!  I'll have to see if there are any Bally places around here.

Thanks for your help!

They actually have a body fat testing thing there too, but it's one of those electronic ones that you hold (notorious for being inaccurate).  Regardless, the metabolism test is that simple; at least the one I did was.

Good luck with finding one and you're welcome :]

I recommend it. I actually went to a diet clinic and had a nutritionist do mine, although it was 120 bucks...but way worth it. You breathe into a tube for ten minutes and then they test your resting rate. After that they do a handheld BF% test, and then they give you your chart with stats and a breakdown. I still use mine!

LINNY- or anyone  that has had an ED, did you find that your metabolism had been damaged?

agruskin--My metabolism was damaged even after I'd been in recovery for a couple of months. I was burning 1350, which apparently was 150 cals less than what I should have been burning [while sedentary]. I know there was a time when I was only burning like 800 calories naturally, when I was at a MUCH higher weight [I ate that much every day for months and didn't lose a thing]!

I would absolutely love to do it, I think it would really put my mind at ease and make things a lot easier!

I'll try and find a diet clinic around here =)
So the calculated rate these metabolic assessments give you is the RMR, which does not include any physical activity, correct?

REVOLUTION, im not srue that i understood what you wrote.  im trying to gain, i just wonder if my metabolism is damaged.  how often do ppl's metabolisms become damaged anyways?  i hope that by eating more it wont be damaged or will at least become normal, dont really know waht that even is.

does anyone know how much it costs to get one of these done?

you can go here and enter your zip code to find BodyGem and MedGem providers: http://www.microlifeusa.com/products_weightma nage.asp

I was quoted $40 by a local gym provider.

I talked to my doctor about this awhile back, she referred me to the local hospital to do the test. Maybe your local hospital offers it. I didn't have it done because I figured it wouldn't be covered by insurance. As far as accuracy, i think it's the most accurate test they have available for measuring you metabolism. Not sure exactly how it works, it measures the gases you exhale.

I got my RMR tested through a fitness/lifestyle company. I wrote about in my journal: http://www.calorie-count.com/users/cellophane _star/155561.html

Basically, you put on a mask and breathe only through your mouth for 10 minutes while the machine measures your breathing. I thought it was fascinating.
For my test it was $120, but like I stated above, I got the whole nine. Not only did I do the breathing tube thing to check my metabolic rate, but they took my BF%, a wrote up my vitamin intakes, carb/protein/fat ratios. Basically everything.

Agruskin, my metabolism was damaged actually and I am trying to get out of starvation mode as we speak, but my resting rate is 1400 and my BMR is 1580 (according to the test). But someone at my height, 5'7, age 22, and active should be around 1800 for their BMR. When I got my test done the lowest she said someone read with 700 at their resting rate and that was an anorexic of ten years.

When you get the test done though make sure that you don't eat prior because that can change the reading. Go in the morning so that you are not famished. And you can also ask for a desired meal plan afterwards. I also made sure that I got measured for no activity and then added in my activity.

This helped me put everything in perspective though because just to stay alive I need 1400, and during ed I was eating 400 probably.....so this made me realize how much I want my life back and how I will never put my body through this again!
This is where I went....not sure if it is helpful or not but its worth a shot!

eeek, LINNY, now im scared that my metabolism is damamged?!  w/o getting the test done i suppose that there is no way of knowing though?  can your metabolism be fixed??

thanks for sharing your experiences, cellophane_star and positivelinny.  that was helpful.  and thanks for the link, anaxandra, i think i'm going to call a place and get mine tested.

I just thought I'd let you know that I got mine done at my Pulminologists office, and all it cost me was my co-pay.

Check your health plan and see if it covers a metabolic test and find out if your insurer knows what doctors in your network provide them.  That is probably the cheapest (and possibly easiest) way to get it done.
