I'm not sure where you are eating but I ate at on the border today and I ordered the pico shrimp tacos and it came with two soft tacos with shrimp and salsa and lettuce, it came with black beans and vegetables all for 490 cals and 5 grams of fat. It was very filling and high in protien and fiber! Also, very yummy!!!

I have this same problem because I LOVE la comida mexicana.  I am not sure what kind of Mexican resturant you are going to (americanized or authentic), but here is what I have learned.  Stay away from burritos, because they are always huge and so good, and the flour tortilla is a big ticket item.  Also, try to get black beans instead of refried, or even veggies.  The rice can also be a big calorie grabber, so if you really want it, try to get a half order of the rice and beans.  A lot of places (even the authentic) are starting to offer vegetarian choices that have a lot of veggies and usually aren't cooked in lard.  Get any condiments such as guacamole and sour cream on the side.  And don't scarf the chips!  That is my biggest weakness because I love chips and salsa.

If all else fails and you don't have a lot of choices, get something that sounds good, and portion control.  If I know that I am going out to dinner, I usually plan my calories for the day around the fact that I am not going to be able to measure and know everything that is put into my meal, so my count might not be accurate.

Oh, also get Corona Light.......Laughing

I always go for the chicken fajitas and don't eat the tortillas, sour cream, guacamole or rice (so, basically just the meat and veggies...lol).  The way I figure it, its probably around 500 calories for the whole thing (we're talking about the authentic Mexican restaurants here).

I do pretty much the same thing as misty1993, except I order the veggie fajitas and ask that they use very little oil when they prepare them. I usually don't eat the tortillas, but if I do I only use one. Also go easy on cheese/sour cream/guacamole. And I don't eat the rice, but I will have some of the beans unless the are prepared with lard. If I want chips & salsa I take a few and send the rest back, so I won't eat them out of boredom. Hope this helps =)
