LOL! Im a hispanic male, and my mom likes mexican restaurants. To cut a long story short get some water, lemons(or limes) some sweet and low and just make lemonade. If they have a garden salad get that, if they have a grilled chicken salad, get that for protein, but some of the mexican places ive been to like to practically put a whole chicken under the little amount lettuce (usually with a whole lotta cheese on the side of the salad w/some slices of boiled egg), while others put 4-6 thin strips. Be sure to ask them to not put cheese or at least to put it in a separate little bowl.

Ive seen MANY mexican menus and the options in most of them were fried this and fried that, if u wanna order one of these ask if they can grill it for u instead (some places do).

I hope this helps.
Haaa....I'm a freak for Mexican food, so I can't even tempt myself....I would, however, suggest a piece of grilled fish with Pico de Gallo....No Rice, No CHIPS, maybe a small side salad with a touch of Guacamole and Salsa for "dressing"and a small (1/2 cup) serving of black beans (not refried!)...You CAN eat healthy, you DO NOT have to blow it....Good Luck!!!
that's a tough one.  Lots of hiden calories in mexican food (worth every bite though) Stick to grilled beef or chicken...tortillas are high in fat and calories so watch for those.

I, personally, am of the mindset to get whatever you are wanting and just eat half and take the rest home.  This is about living...not dieting
tacos (with corn tortillas) can be a really good choice, as long as you don't eat more than two, and get them without cheese.  also, avoid refried beans.  lots of places let you get black beans instead, and they're somewhat better.  i will usually order a two-enchilada plate (chicken enchiladas w/tomatillo salsa) then just eat one enchilada, half the rice and half the beans, and then you have lunch for tomorrow!  doing that makes it about 400 calories a serving.
If they have fish tacos, those are usually pretty good if the fish isn't fried and you don't eat the sour cream. I think they are about 350 cals each. Try substituting refried beans with black beans, flour tortilla with corn tortilla, and try getting a spicy sauce (salsa, pico de gallo) instead of cheese.

Tortilla chips and cheese are sadly very high in calories... which is just awful for me because nachos have always been one of my absolute favorite foods!!

I've been making my own burritos at home that I've been really happy with... ground turkey, jalapenos, salsa and green chile sauce, and a piece of lettuce. Sometimes I put in some canned low salt black beans instead of part of the turkey. I use La Tortilla Factory whole wheat tortillas which are 80 cals for a big tortilla or 50 for a small one! 1 burrito in a large tortilla is 300-350 cals. I have that and a salad for dinner.

Okay, this reply ended up belonging in Recipes...
I am also of the mindset that you should order whatever you want and take half home.  Food is not the enemy, and mexican is delicious!

That said, tortillas are really high in calories.  Stay away from anything wrapped in a tortilla, or just eat the insides and not the tortilla part (enchiladas, burritos, etc).  A large tortilla can have 200 calories in it, depending on the size, obviously.

The good news is that salsa is quite good for you!  Also pico de gallo, which I think is delish.
I had mexican last night....

Small chicken burrito
NO sour cream
Low-fat cheeses
Lettuce
Tomato
Olives

Mexican is the reason I yo-yo. The typical stuff one gets is so bad for you. Avoid chips, frozen sugar-laden drinks and rice like the plague.
Chicken fajitas.  I have the same dilemna.  I'm going tomorrow.  I went on a bunch of websites this AM and it seems my safest bet is to get the chicken fajitas w/o the guacamole, w/o the rice, w/o the beans but I'm definitely eating the pico de gallo.  Basically, my meal will be the chicken and veggies...I might indulge in a tortilla.  The place I'm going to only offers flour tortillas.
I would get one or two carne asada or chicken "street" tacos.  They are small and usually made with two corn tortillas.  I would peel off one of the tortillas.  The ones at Rubio's are only 130 calories so I would use that as a guide.  I would not suggest the fajitas.  They appear healthy but most places have them dripping in oil.
How about chicken tortilla soup...  It is delicious and  if you don't add the tortilla strips or sour cream it should be pretty healthy, although high in sodium.  Should be between 200-400 calories.
I would get whatever you like - but guestimate less than 500 calories (or whatever fits into your calories for that day), look up mexican food calories online - before you go, if it means 1/2 or 1/4 or the portion, then go ahead, and give the rest to a friend - and enjoy yourself!
I like to get the shrimp tacos that are the two small tacos with lots of veggies in the small soft/corn tortillas -- although I rarely see them at what I would call "americanized" mexican resturants.  and of course pico de gallo!  I will usually use a little bit of guac over sour cream -- still not low calorie -- but better nutritional bang for my buck!
