Microwaved Popcorn - Can You Explain the Strange Sensation In my Mouth?

Quote  |  Reply

I have a strange experience with popcorn... I love the stuff - but I find this a tad bizzarre... (but it does not stop me from eating it!)

It happens with microwaved popcorn - I have no issues with air popped (even when butter is added!).

I get this strange sensation all over the inside of my mouth - its a little difficult to describe - but it is like the roof of my mouth and my tongue become coated and they almost feel sticky - or like they aren't really touching eachother. Or maybe like all the moisture has been zapped out of my mouth. I feel like a dog that just ate peanut butter and is smacking their mouth...

Drinking liquid doesn't help rinse this feeling out - in fact it might even make it feel like I'm coated with MORE of whatever this something is.

Does anyone else ever experience this?

Am I crazy?

Is this some chemical in microwaved popcorn creating this? Is it just the fake butter coating my mouth?

I used to get that feeling when I was a kid if I ate too much Cap'n Crunch. I have no clue why, but you aren't crazy.

Hi!  No, you're not crazy because the same thing happens to me w/ buttered microwave popcorn, which is (part of) the reason I refuse to eat it.  It freaks me out, and I can only assume it has something to do with the fake butter, because "plain" microwave popcorn does not have the same effect, nor does air popped.  Ugh, now I'm imagining that sensation.  Ugh!!

All the crappy chemicals they put into the popcorn to give it the 'buttered' flavour?

same here. you're not imagining it. it's icky.

Well I'm glad to hear I am not the only one who feels this!

Everytime I've asked someone sharing my popcorn if they ever feel it - they look at me like I've lost my mind and then they steal more of my popcorn!

This has occasionally happened to me, but not every time. I think it has to do with the brand of popcorn, maybe?

There's a chance it happened to me because some of the popcorn formerly in my pantry was expired.

I'm going to guess it's the fake butter.  I get it from quite a lot of types of microwave popcorn, especially if I eat the entire bag myself.  I like it pretty well but I don't like to eat an entire bag at one time, so I typically make hot-air and use "butter-flavored" spray...

This happens to me too - I just don't eat any microwaved popcorn now. Air-popped tastes so much better anyway!

It happens to me, too, but not with every kind of microwaved popcorn, just the "butter" flavor ... I find the low-fat versions taste fine.
