I use unsweetened soy milk. It can be a little hard to find the unsweetened kind, since I think every one likes sweetened, or v anilla. But I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so it's a nice alternative. I have used it once for cooking and didn't like the taste it imparted (to a sauce), but it might be fine in bakery goods. Silk has a version (green carton, I think?).

I like water personally.

For things like cereal I prefer rice milk. I buy Original Enriched Rice Dream (it's organic, too). I also keep West Soy Non-Fat Plain around for baking... plus it's really good in the occasional iced coffee. :) Hemp milk and almond milk are great too... it all depends on my mood and the price, honestly.

For drinking, I agree with Mike Lane...I would rather drink water :) I'm not a fan of milk alternative's out of the carton.

For cereal and baking, I would agree with disease_of_ease that Original Enriched Rice Dream and West Soy Non-Fat Plan would be up there on the list.

A lot of people really like the Light Silk...most of the vanilla flavors are sweet, so plain would be the way to go. I wasn't a big fan of the almond milk that I tried, it was too rich and dense.

It's a matter of taste/preference I guess, and what you are using it for.

for low calorie unsweetened almond milk seems to win in that category....atleast from what i've seen. rice dream is also good. silk and 8th continent are good, but a little too thick for my taste.

as brighteyes said, its a matter of personal preference. what for whats on sale and try everything!

I don't do rice or soy milk.  I prefer to make my own almond milk, which is so simple and tasty.   The unsweetened almond milk you can buy in the stores is good too. Laughing

I use rice milk from time to time when I am cooking. I also sometimes use coconut milk, high in saturated fat but it sure tastes good.

I always fluctuated between using plain soymilk and almond milk.  The soymilk I drink is sweetened, so it's higher in sugars, but it also has more protein than almond milk.  Recently I've started mixing them half and half, and now I get the best of both worlds.

I'm a big fan of Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla (but the unflavored stuff is good too).  I originally started using it to just save calories, but now I actually prefer it to milk.

Almond Breeze (unsweetened original).

I don't like the taste or thickness of soya milk, and rice milk was too thin, and doesn't heat well (i.e. in hot chocolate made on the stove).

I like the water comment, but have you ever tried water on cereal? DON'T. Trust me.

I LOVE unsweetened Almond Breeze!!! The store I used to buy it from discontinued it, though. I found 64oz tetrapacks of unsweetened Almond Dream on sale for $3 at my local health food store, so I stocked up a bit. I prefer the taste of Almond Breeze, but Almond Dream has 10 less calories per serving [30 calories for 8 ounces] and I thiiiink less additives [but is still vitamin enriched]. Sometimes I buy unsweetened soy milk, but I'm trying to cut back my soy consumption. I've never really been a fan of rice milk, but I think oat milk and hazelnut milks are good. I have yet to try hemp milk, as it is $4 and some change wherever I've seen it!!!

I also don't like the sweetened versions - they are too sweet and too many calories.  I don't like to drink my calories.

In general I drink water, but if I want milk, I get unsweetened almond milk - both regular and chocolate.  Both flavors are good enough to drink and only 40-45 calories per serving.

My husband prefers unsweetened Silk soymilk over cereal - it's a little cheaper than almond milk.  However, I can't drink it - it doesn't taste good, but it is OK to cook with and put over cereal, oatmeal, etc.

 How do you make it?

Unsweetened Almond Breeze - it is amazing!

Sorry to get off topic a little...does almond milk have any of the same health benefits of eating raw almonds?

I haven't tried rice milk, but I do drink Almond Breeze unsweetened original and chocolate.  If you're looking for a high heat cooking option, almond milk is better since soy milk will curdle at high temperatures.  I don't think the rice milk stands up well to high heat either.

To answer litebulb11's question, eating the food in its natural form is always best.  The almond milk is processed and this causes any food to lose something along the way.

I think orange juice is the best alternative of milk because it gives energy and its taste is also very tasty.
