I'm saddended to find out I cannot consume soy anymore.  So anyways, this morning I had to use gross 2% milk, because that's all mother wants, and buys.  Anyways I'm totally against drinking cow milk, so I'm not going to drink that anymore.  I'll just use water in my oatmeal.

But I was searching on the internet on the dangers of cow milk and came across this page:

 http://www.notmilk.com/.

Just wondering if you guys mind taking a look at what's on this page and share your opinions or concerns or whatever.

What milk do you drink?  I know there is cow, goat, sheep, soy, almond, rice and oat.  Which is the healthier (in your opinion, if healthy)?

I know theres a lot of people who are against drinking cows milk and thats fine if thats what they believe in I respect that.

I've always grown up on drinking just regular cows milk and I still do and its caused me no ill effects. I think at the end of the day its really down to personal preferences.

I tried rice milk once and didnt like it, it was to sweet tasting.

Yeah, I sort of agree.  What kind of cow milk do you drink?

I'm know a few people who lived up into their 90's, drinking coke and eating fritos everyday.  I guess in reality, even though we may try to eat healthy and everthing, when we are destined to die, we will.

I guess in reality, all man is trying to do with the organic foods and stuff is try to live longer when in reality we are just mortal beings meaning we all have to die some day.

LMFAO :)

I grew up on 2% cow's milk - just the run of the mill grocery store stuff.  Whole milk was icky.  Then, as an adult, I graduated to 1%, and finally, now I'm drinking the fat free stuff.  I've learned you have to be careful which store you buy from, because the milk tastes different at some stores.  For example, one dairy brand tasted icky sweet (like breast milk), another seems really watery.

Right now - we simply cannot afford to buy even organic milk, much less something like soy milk.  The idea of cow hormones affecting people hormones seems rather far-fetched to me, though I can understand the range-fed vs mill cows having better tasting milk and meat.

Really, who is to say what will crop up in the next 15 years?  How do you feel about vat beef?

What about almond milk?

http://www.bluediamond.com/shop/natural/almon dBreeze32.cfm

I don't think its that expensive and it keeps well in your cupboards.

I drink skim milk (my preference for all milk is really 1%. Has much more milk flavor than skim (skim tastes like water until you get used to it), 1-2% milk, light soy vanilla milk, and wants to try almond milk! :)

I sorta agree because no matter how healthy you are trying to be, people who will live longer will live longer no matter what they eat. Like my great grandmother who smoked a pack of cigerettes or more a day and lived til 90something years old.

While I'm alive I want to look good though and thus it leads to lowerfat milk. I don't really LIKE milk (never drank milk straight really even as a kid) only in my coffee, cereal, etc so I don't really care I drink too miniscule amount to care.

LOL.  Organic milk is expensive!

Yeah, I'm just gonna drink skim milk I guess.  I just got an "epiphany" if thats what you want to call it in my post above.

LOL

Oh wow...I forgot about almond!

Well can't drink it because of allergies.  But I bet it taste delicious! :)

I went to a health/natural food store today because I wanted to try quinoa, and they had hemp milk.  Didn't notice any pricing, though.

Skim milk and 2% (I don't even remember the taste of whole) taste exactly the same to me.  It seems, in my case, that if I like a certain food, I'm not picky about it.  I don't have a problem with most school food, even the bouncing hot dogs I had in middle school.

edit: but maybe that's because I don't drink straight milk- only in stuff.

if you drink it plain, there's a really obvious difference between skim, 1%, 2%, and whole milk. i like 2% best. it's really healthy for you! calcium, protein, good fat (some saturated fat is necessary for your hormones and brain, and this is a really healthy, unrefined source of saturated fat)

i like soy milk a lot, too. yum. sorry you can't have it!

almond milk... i drank that all the time in my ed. extremely low calorie, some fat because i was forced to get fat somehow but it was unsaturated, and practically no carbs. the stuff tastes like barely-nut-flavored water to me, though. it totally ruins my cereal in the morning! :P

i hope you come to like cow's milk! sorry this happened!

That site? Propaganda, but then I don't think one expects an un-biased opinion from a site like that. lol

I use skim milk, because I can't find Kumis here. :(

I love cow's milk. I usually drink 2% or 3.5%, depending what's on special. I'm not a fan of low-fat milks personally... I don't want to buy something with half the flavour and texture removed!

Puh8suwrux - you're right that that the hormones used to inject cows doesn't have a direct effect on humans, but studies showing indirect effects are, in my opinion at least, fairly plausible.

Studies have found it's unlikely that the growth hormone (r-BST) injected into cows affect human growth. However, the use of growth hormones raises the risk of infection in cows; both at the site of the bi-weekly injections and because the more milk a cow produces, the higher the risk of mastitis in the udders.

Because there are higher levels of infection in r-BST hormone-raised cows, more antibiotics are used. These antibiotics do enter the human digestive system and do have a small negative effect on digestion, because they kill off the good bacteria in your gut.

In addition, while the use of the growth hormone r-BST is unlikely to affect human growth, it does trigger the production in the cow's udders of another substance called insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 produced by cows is indentical to IGF-1 produced by humans and may or may not have negative effects. Marion Nestle writes, "Studies have linked high blood levels of IGF-1 to increases in the risk of cancers of the prostate in men and the breast in postmenopausal women... Even so it is not at all clear that a modest increase in the risk of these cancers has anything to do with drinking r-BST milk." In other words, it might have a small effect, it might not.

Despite these doubts, I still drink normal milk. I can't afford organic, and that's the end of the matter. I'm not going to get worked up about something I can't change - although yes, I would like it if the dairy industry raised cows free from artificial growth hormones and excessive antibiotics. If I can afford organic one day, I will buy it - there are valid reasons for buying organic, even Big Organic (including the smaller effect on the environment) aside from what's directly in the milk.

But for now, I'm still drinking and cooking with milk.

To the OP - why did you have to stop drinking soy milk? It's very unusual to not be able to drink soy milk or cow's milk. I would suggest sheep milk as an alternative, or lactose-free milk if it's the lactose in cow's milk that bothers you.

awww that stinks. maybe try skim? or 1%? maybe it wont taste as gross to you.

i grew up on whole cow milk, have been drinking 2% since i started here at CC. got down to 1% for a bit but i really prefer 2%. 2% makes my daughter gag, she prefers 1%, so i started buying 2% again when she moved to her dorm. i have a hard time paying for organic because i drink a lot of milk.

good luck finding something the works for you girl. hope your mom will buy you new things to try as long as they arent crazy expeensive. :)

Both soy milk and cow's milk seem to have huge disadvantages. Rice milk seems to be the way to go. Right now I am forced to drink cows milk due to financial reasons (rice milk is so expensive).

I drink organic milk. Usually skim or 1%. It doesnt really cost me much more than regular milk. I usually cant go thru an entire gallon of milk without it going bad so I instead get the half gallon of organic. (both are about 3.50)

I only do organic milk and a few organic veggies. Only where I can taste a difference. OMG organic carrots... to die for they are so delicious and sweet compared to regular ones.

Almond milk is my favorite. You can make your own pretty easily, too.

As for the genes thing, there is tremendous evidence that though we may have genes that predispose us to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc, there are lifestyle 'cues' that will 'turn on' those genes...in other words, we don't have to turn those genes on, it is not inevitable.

If you know someone who smoked a pack a day and lived to be 90, that person didn't likely have a genetic weakness in the lung cancer department, so the smoking didn't turn that gene 'on'. However, perhaps that person had a weakness for diabetes, but they didn't overly consume sugar, kept their weight in check and basically did not turn that gene 'on'. They could have just as easily not smoked, been obese, and died of diabetes related complications decades earlier.

So in short, just because you have certain genes doesn't mean those genes have to express themselves. That part is up to you. And that is why people care about prolonging their lives, and more importantly, prolonging the quality of their lives.

I drink semi skimmed milk, skimmed milk tastes a bit to watery and tasteless.

Supposedly it's bad for thyroids my doctor said, so I can't drink it. :/

Or any soy products for that matter.

But I'm drinking 1% now.... I forgot how delicious cow milk taste!

Yeah, I was going to buy rice milk, but it's just too expensive.  I guess I'm happy with 1% now. :)

Just googled Kumis.  Milk with 2% of alcohol....interesting
