What can I do to keep my mind off food?
Asked by laurenseuffert on Nov 09, 2009 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I find myself always thinking of food! What can I do to keep my mind off of food until I am really and truly hungry? When I am stressed or think of food that tastes sooo good, I go and eat it.  I need a way to keep my mind off of it so I don't eat when I am not hungry at all and also when the food is there and I'm gonna eat it! How can I say NO! What are ways to help?

Answer

If you are well fed and engaged in what you are doing, then you should not be thinking about food all of the time. Preoccupation with food is actually a sign of semi-starvation.  Your food thoughts may disappear if you (personally) eat 1900 calories in three or more meals a day.  In addition, boredom can initiate food thoughts as a source of stimulation.  If that's an issue, when you start to think about food, switch to thinking about creating a life you love.  Also, learn  strategies to cope with stress, such as deep breathing, daydreaming, physical activity, listening to music, reading, keeping a journal, drawing, or any other creative outlet that is fulfilling.
