The other day I noticed 3 things that my diet is lacking, that seem to be effecting my health... a) calcium b) iron and c) fibre. And by lacking I mean I don't think I was getting more than 10% of my daily calcium, less than 6% of my iron (which would explain my hair loss) and only like 14g of fibre. I went through a month of my CC logs and looked at all the percentages. They were bad. So anyway, I went to the grocery store last night to find stuff with iron in it... meat only had like 6%, I can't get enough iron in my meat so I was getting frustrated until I saw a box of mini wheats that said for 25 cereal biscuits it had 60% iron. Well that and milk with the cereal would help a lot. But the thing is, it's full of sugar. Is all that sugar worth it for the nutrition I'm missing? I know a lot of people are against sugar on here and I'm sure they have good reasons. Anyone have any input?
If I were you I'd take the extra calcium, iron and fiber and say screw the sugar. If you are really nervous about having that much sugar (I assume we're talking frosted mini wheats here?), you could get the plain mini wheats and add some fruit on top, like bananas or strawberries...or you could add your own sugar to plain mini wheats. I also suggest looking into Total.
lol yeah definitely the frosted ones... I just can't imagine going straight to plain mini wheats. I'm having a hard time converting myself from junk food over to somewhat healthy foods... my taste buds are giving me a hard time. Even the frosted ones aren't the best tasting to me right now since I grew up on all the horrible kid cereals, but they are ok and the fact that they are full of iron and fibre makes me want to eat it for those reasons. The sugar part is the only thing keeping me interested in them, so it's like sugar vs. nutrition. Is it worth it type thing. I really don't know what else can have as much iron as these do.
If it is one of the best ways you see to get your fiber and iron content up, then yes, it's worth it. Once your taste buds get used to this level of sugar....I assume when you say "bad kids cereals" we're talking the fruity ones, marshmallowed ones, chocolate/cookie ones?....you might look into weaning yourself off of that type of sugar. I'm pretty sure the frosted mini wheats frosting is based in sucrose which is essentially table sugar...maybe some of the artificial stuff which is a joining of glucose and fructose. Fructose is fruit/vegetable sugar...eventually that should taste as sweet as the frosting and you can have plain mini wheats with cut up strawberries or bananas.
Did you ever try the new frosted mini wheats? the strawberry cream, blueberry muffin, cinnamon streusel, maple brown sugar? I tried the strawberry ones when they first came out and I could barely eat a bowl, they were so sweet. lol To each his/her own.
Bottom line: If this is the best way you see yourself getting closer to your fiber and iron requirements, then yes it is worth the sugar. As long as your active it shouldn't matter.
i personally think that mini-wheats are a fairly healthy cereal, and i definitely think the vitamins and fiber are well worth it, even it the cereal is a little sugary.
Nope, skip the cereal and go for cottage cheese ... super high in iron, good on calcium too. To top up fiber try ground flax seed in a smoothie.
I have frosted mini-wheats every morning for breakfast, and I have been maintaining for a long while. I love them. I find that they keep me full for at least 3 hours. I also ahve trouble with my iron and fibre intakes, so the mini wheats DEFINITELY ahve helped that (no more headaches!).
Love them.
