15 minutes

Quote  |  Reply

I just started using the elliptical machines a month ago. I love it, but it is tough. At first I could only do it for a few minutes. Now I am up to 15. I can do the treadmill or bicycle machine for an hour and still not be as sore as the elliptical make me.  I was wondering if anyone had the same problem when you first started? And if so, how long did it take you to get to 45 minutes?

I could only do a few minutes until I learned the proper way to use the machine. What I didn't know is that you actually have to lift your heels up like you are running. I thought you had to keep your feet flat. Are you lifting your heels?

I'm now up to 30 minutes at a fairly vigorous pace.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm lifting my heels. I make sure that I am next time. Thanks for your input.

It may be the machine you are using. It sounds like you have the arobic fitness to do more.  Does the machine cause you some pain? Is it awkeard?

I love elipticals and have found they are not all created equal. So much depends on stride length and angle. They need to have at least an 18" stride length to be comfortable for me. Any less and I quit 'cause it kind of hurts.

No, the elliptical doesn't cause me pain and it isn't awkward. Although it does make my toes go to sleep sometimes. I think it just works muscles I haven't worked on in a while. I'm up to 20 minutes now, so I'm slowly progressing.

I just started workout with the elliptical a few days ago and i am like you I can only do it for a few minutes.  I'm sure i could do more if i push myself but at the same time i dont want to be sore the next day.

I recommend that since you are up to twenty minutes, you could take a small break, maybe stretch a little, then jump back on for another set. That is how I built up my tolerance and then I just eliminated the break altogether. Make sure you stretch before you start, this always helps me.

Good luck to you!
