The miracle of Porridge
Recently I've discovered how amazing porridge is, i have mine with water to lessen the cals...plus i don't really taste that much of a difference.
BUT i wondered what you all put with it?
i've been having honey and cinamon...but i think this is causing me to crave sweet thing later on...any other ideas as to what I should have with my lovely bowl of porridge that's relatively cheap to buy?
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to Foods forum
last night i mixed in some peanut butter and a sliced banana. usually i make it with vanilla, cinnamon & splenda. pumpkin is also really good!
I make mine with 1/2 milk, 1/2 water and I sprinkle mixed seeds and runny honey on the top to give it a little sweetness and crunch.
Is porridge the same thing as oatmeal?
Porridge oats or porridge = oatmeal
I have half a banana, honey and assortment of seeds and nuts. I make mine with half soya milk, half water. Also like it with california raisons. I would just experiment! Stewed apple and cinnamon could be very, very good....
Cinnamon
Raisins/Dried cranberries/Goji berries
Vanilla soy milk
Peanut butter
Nuts
Flaxseed
Syrup
Protein powder
Hot cocoa mix
Sliced/Chopped/Etc. fresh fruit (apples, bananas)
Apple butter or fruit preserves
I use different combinations of the above
OK, this is sooo wierd cos I had porridge this morning! First time for years I thought I would have some again! I coated mine in cinnamon with a pinch of sugar to bring out the cinnamon and a handful of raisins! Hmmmmm!
Think I will defo try some of the other suggestions here tho...I fancy apple and cinnamon tomo maybe...great ideas mars_0112!
I love oats ^.^
I do mine with some combination of the following:
Bananas
Flaked coconut
Flavored Coffee Creamer/vanilla soy
Almonds/nuts/trail mix
Cottage cheese or yogurt
Honey/brown sugar/marmalade or jam
Canned pumpkin/apple sauce
Frozen berries/ Dried fruits
Peanut butter or Nutella
Another oat lover here!!
Grated apple and raisins is yummy
Agree with the above for Nutella (try it as a dessert if you don't want to be craving things mid morning) nom nom
O or icecream for a dessert too (the cold/hot consistency is gorgeous)
Peanut Butter is a winner
um..jam?
marmite? (worth a try)
coconut
jam
berries
banana, apples
raisins
granola
cereal
hot chocolate powder
yogurt coated fruit (the yogurt melts, so good)
grated carrot, nutmeg, cinnamon & cloves = carrot cake porridge (sometimes i add yogurt coated fruit to this)
egg (never tried this though...)
ooh i put marinara sauce and a little grated cheese in mine. its awesome!! sort of like a pasta dish you should try it :)
I've found that I really like putting different flavored apple sauces in them. Mott's has a variety of no sugar added apple sauces that have other fruits mixed it. It gives the oatmeal an interesting texture, but its really tasty.
I have old fashion oatmeal atleast a couple times a week: brown sugar, golden and dark raisin, cinamin and 2% milk. I really do enjoy it and find it very satisying and filling.
I plan to try thanks to all of you shredded apples sounds yummy with cinamon!
And the coffee creamer sounds interesting maybe try mine which is hazelnut with some trail mix?
But are you kidding red sauce and cheese!
I love porridge :) I'm having it for dinner tonight
With hazelnuts and a banana + a small square of dark chocolate on top
And I make mine with skim milk... I think it tastes better
I normally just make reg. old fashion oatmeal. Water, cream, sugar.
Sometimes Ill add fruit and nut or cinnamon.
Im really into trying the whole cheese and marinara idea though. That sounds yummy
Ok, I've been an oatmeal convert for about 7 years now, and I've tried it all.
Today was a first, and it may just be cause I'm fighting a cold but...
brewed herbal tea, prepared oats in herbal tea; added cinnamon, ground ginger, fresh chopped ginger root and finely sliced lemon with the peel.
My love for oats is deep and unwaivering.
I use toasted or roasted walnuts...........very good for you, cinnamon and yellow raisins. My breakfast every morning and it works for me.
NEVER heard of cheese on oats, but if you thihnk about it, apart from the oats its just like a pasta dish! I reckon it would be well tasty!! Im gonna try that at the weekend!! :D
wow! you've all come up with amazing suggetions! im actually really excited for my porridge oats tomorrow, im thinking of doing something new and different with them everyday! v much like the sound of most of them! so im going to experiment!
thanks for all your great suggestions!
If you're looking for a savoury oatmeal dish, you could try it with a slice of cheese and a cooked sunny-side egg on top, so the yolk saturates the oats. Mmm. I've never tried it, but it sounds good to me.
