Mirena Birth Control

Quote  |  Reply

I've been using Mirena birth control for just over a year now. There are websites dedicated to telling horror stories about Mirena. Luckily I haven't had any problems. It's been great. Except....I'm wondering if it is contributing to my weight gain. I gained 30 pounds while pregnant with my son, and I lost it all by my 6 week check-up (when I got Mirena). I quickly packed on the pounds...and now I've gained back those 30 pounds plus another 10. I also started on Paxil the same day. I've always had weight problems and I certainly don't blame either for me being overweight, but I can't help but think that maybe they're not helping. Does anyone have any input or experience with Mirena? I'm currently weeding myself off of Paxil but I dont want to give up Mirena unless I have to.

I have the Mirena IUS and love it.  I've had it for 16 months and no weight gain or any side effects.

Hi! This is my first time ever posting any messages on this site...I just got Mirena "installed" yesterday. My doctor said that I was a great candidate for it and I so wanted not to worry about pills/prescriptions, etc... so I went with it (the pain was awful!). When I got home after the procedure and read a bunch of blogs, I also came across the horror stories people are sharing about the IUD.

I am so afraid about the things I read on the health side of things, but I am also concerned about the weight gain. I am recently lost about 7 lbs and I am currently not overweight. Although I am at a healthy weight range I want to get back in my old pants for which I still need to lose another 5-7lbs. For the last 2 months I've been very diligent about counting my calories, watch what I eat and stay active, and would HATE to see all my efforts going down the drain due to Mirena.

It's been a month and a half since your original post and I am wondering if you have experienced any changes in your weight or other side effects.

Thanks!

I read all the horror stories right before I got mirena too! I was truely scared and just about backed out. I do believe that those stories are true for some people, but luckily I still seem to be fine. As least I'm pretty sure things that I deal with aren't caused by it, altough I suppose its possible. It was really painful for me too! And the first couple weeks weren't fun either and I thought I had made a mistake. BUT....shortly after that things were great. Its nice never having to worry about it. I can't take a pill regularly to save my life. I've also not had a period in just about a year...which is excellent. About weight, I really dont know what to tell you. I'm someone whose weight has always been an issue and whose weight fluctuates regularly so I dont know what is from mirena and whats not. I got on paxil the same time I started on mirena and i stopped taking it about a month ago. I lost 10 pounds (which isn't a whole lot for me, but its something!) I'm thinking it was the paxil that made me gain all my baby weight back to quickly...well that and the chocolate ;) I really hope things continue to go well with mirena and if anything happens i'll let you know.
