Mispronunciations
This is my first time posting my own topic in "The Lounge" (and I think only like me 3rd new topic that I've ever posted myself), so forgive me for being a bit intimidated, ha.
But I just have to name a pet peeve:
It comes from Top Chef Las Vegas. The contestant Jennifer has made ceviche a few times. Now, I'm no chef, and definitely not a wizard of culinary terminology. But she always pronounces it as "cevich," while every other chef (including the judges) says "cevich-ay." I've only ever heard it pronounced the second way, not only on Top Chef but on other cooking shows. lol I can't explain it, but it drives me crazy how she pronounces it different. In one of the episodes 2 other contestants made a ceviche and pronounced it in the "normal" (at least what I consider normal) way, and she still said it the other way. Maybe it can go both ways. But it just irks me.
lol, that's my rant, I hope I don't get picked apart after some of the debates & comments I've seen on here as of late.
But all of that aside, what are some of your pet peeves?
it bothers me that people:
write loose instead of lose weight.
spell it alot when it's two words... a lot.
just cruise along in the fast lane, and then speed up when i try to pass them. grrrr!
I always mispronounce "hors d'ouevers" when I read it. It comes from having to learn how to spell it.
When I read the word Drosophila (fruit fly),
I read it as DRO-so-FEEL-a
instead of dro-SAHF-el-a
Yet if I'm just talking about it, I know how it's pronounced.
my coworker mispronounces things all the time. often she'll say them just as they are spelled. example? we have mexican for lunch, and she said something about chipotle sauce. she pronounced it chi-POTTLE (rhymes with bottle).
there have been many others....

i remember being a kid and reading hors d'ouevres out loud off something once. i pronounced it hors DOO-vers.
Ah! I've heard the same thing about Chipotle too.
Once I was sitting next to 2 girls outside of school & one didn't know how to pronounce a name that she saw on a piece of paper (she had never said it before). The other girl was saying the name, and when her friend went to repeat it, she said it wrong (multiple times). I just didn't understand how that was possible when she was being instructed on the right pronunciation?! haha
One thing I can't say: junk drawer. I always say drunk drawer.
falling - like in Friends when Phoebe tries to teach Joey French, and he just says things like "je blee blue blah"?
lol @ drunk drawer.
I hate how 'carabiner' is pronounced.
I keep mispronouncing it "kah RAB i ner" instead of "kar a BEEN er"
I hate it when people pronounce gyro as JI-row instead of yeer-o. Even after you explain it that feel the need to say JI-row.
I don't know why, but I hate when people say coo-pon for coupon. I call it a Q-pon.
I also can't stand when people call pillows "pellows". Drives me nuts.
Plus, the word "aint". Don't use it. Its not really a word.
Why is the word Southern prounounced like suh-thern? It isn't spelled like that.
Can't anybody understand that if its not done my way than it must be wrong?![]()
mmm love me some tasty JI-ros and maybe some nice fa-JI-tas!
i say Q-pon too.. and a friend of mine laughed and laughed. HMMPH. SHE said it wrong not me!
I say ain't when I'm slanging something, but not scattered into daily conversation as a real word.
My DH says "an-TAN-na" and "AM bu LANCE" for antenna and ambulance.
But, I say "worter" instead of water, cause my accent won't completely die.
at least I still say "daughter" not "dorter" like my mom!!! ha! It didn't ALL stick!

oh dear lord! kesaDILLas, I can't stand that one. My friend says it all the time, and I'm always a second away from correcting her but instead I stop myself. The first time I heard it I was about to ask "Are you serious?" I still don't know if that's how she seriously thinks it's pronounced...
pronouncing the S in illinois, des moines, etc.
Drives me batty.
I mispronounce things on purpose sometimes.
Target = TAR-jey
Armadillo = Arma-de-yo
Love = Lo-ove (rthyms with move)
and every now and then just because I think it's hilarious (but I know how to say it correctly)
Que-sa-DILL-uhs
