I really miss my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches...

I was hoping that someone could help me with a lower calorie alternative to normal pb&J on white.

I was thinking that I would use Sara Lee white wheat bread, sugar free fruit spread and the peanut butter that diabetics use. It's supposed to not spike your blood sugar and digest slower.

What do you think?

mmm..................   peanut butter

*drool*

Maybe I will have PB and J for dinner too :)

Of course the Aussies here usually think I am crazy when I talk about a PB and J sandwich!  I always say, it sure beats Vegimite,  That stuff is AWFUL! (but low cal)

Please tell me, what is a Vegimite sandwich?

Real peanut butter is actually really good for you, just a little calorie dense. Skip the regular peanut butters (most have added sugar and partially hydrogenated oils and salt) and the low-fat peanut butter alternatives (whatever fillers they add to make fake peanut butter can't be good). Just get a good natural peanut butter made from peanuts and enjoy it in moderation.

My favorite is Kashi waffles with peanut butter and some fruit on top (like a cut up banana or apple or a clementine or some berries). That way I get a little fiber with the sweet fruity flavor and no added sweetener (artificial or otherwise).

yum.
oh and Vegemite is an Australian spread. They eat it on toast.

It tastes like beef bouillon? I guess. salty and bitter.
I think that's awesome. You shouldn't deny yourself, because anything can be worked into a diet (except maybe deep fried Snickers.. eek).

Instead of fruit spread, you could try real fruit: banana slices, thinly sliced apple, or strawberries - mmm. What I would do is, lightly toast the bread. Then, spread the peanut butter on and arrange the slices of fruit. Pile the sandwich together, then stick in the microwave to make it warm and the peanut butter a bit syrupy. :P
Pepperidge Farm makes a Very Thin white bread that is only 45 calories per slice, but it is real white bread, just smaller, skinnier. Because there is not a whole lot of bread there, you don't have to put so much topping on it, so naturally your calories will be less for your pb & j. Use an organic peanut butter (look at the ingredients: should be just peanuts and salt, pretty much) and a sugar free preserves. You get all the taste but in almost more of a snack size!
wow good job guys on the PB2!! Thanks for the advice.

It is this absolutely AWFUL spread that Australians think is the greatest.  Being an American transplant in Australia, they have been trying to bring me over to the dark side ever since.  Brits have a similar spread called Marmite (which the Brit's will tell you is OH SO MUCH BETTER than Vegemite, and the Aussies will disagree).  In my opnion one is just as bad as the other.  Its made from a yeast extract (sounds appetizing eh?)

It is very high in B vitamins, so somewhat healthy besides the sodium content. It looks like brown shoe polish (same consistency too!)  Aussies put it on toast with butter, or do butter, vegemite, and cheese.  They tell me its an acquired taste.... well I can tell you it's one taste I DON'T want to acquire.  I honestly can't even describe the taste, salty yes, but not really bitter, just has a VERY strange after taste.  I must say though, my two year old LOVES the stuff.... I guess you have to be an Aussie to appreciate it!

Now, Nutella which is another popular spread here in Australia is a WHOLE different story.  Granted that one is made from hazelnuts and cocoa.... mmmm..... great, now I am craving Nutella!

Ooooh yes, I like pretty much everything and Vegemite is NAAASTTTY!!! My friends from Australia let me taste it and there aren't any words to describe the horrible taste.  It's not sweet.  It's not tangy, it's just gross.  Like a car liquid.

the only ingredients in pb2 are peanuts, salt, and sugar (:

i went to austraila for a month and my tour leader put vegemite on everything! not one person in our group liked it. she said it was the yeast scrapped off the bottom of the beer barrel. haha. was she joking? tasted like it
organic peanut butter (love both creamy and crunchy) on apple slices or bananas.  Pretty much every day!  I feel like I am being sinful, but it isn't bad!!!
Go to Trader Joes and get peanut butter from there. Theres no sugar added or salt. Its just peanuts and their own oil. Instead of jam have bananas or strawberries. Its the best. You should eat whole grain or sprouted whole grain bread or wheat bread. Not White Wheat bread. Make sure u drink water with it because its fiber. If you don't drink water it does the opposite.

I use a whole wheat bread that is 80 calories for TWO slices of bread (the quality of the bread suffers a bit, but that means you can have a whole sandwhich, which is a little smaller than normal, for 80 calories of bread!). It also doesn't have high fructose corn syrup, which is horrible for you, and in EVERYTHING.

I use a raspberry jam that is organic, and 50 cal a tbsp.

I finish this delicious sandwhich off with one tbsp of this stuff: Smart Balance Omega Natural Creamy Peanut Butter

one tbsp is 100 cal, and it's pretty high in fat, BUT it's good fats. Omega 3's, the stuff you get from fish! (no it doesn't taste like fish haha, they get the omega 3's from flax oil)

A whole sandwhich is only 230, which for a pb&j that's HEALTHY, is pretty great.

I use a 35 calorie a slice bread (70) calories total, 2 tbsp of sugar free jelly (10 calories a TBSP), and 1 TBSP of Skippy's lowfat natural peanut butter (which is also available in chunky and creamy)....I sometimes also have a TBSP of fluff for 10 calories in lieu of the jelly..yumm lol

I have never heard that before.  What exactly do you mean??  I'm very curious because I've really been uping my fiber intake lately.

Thanks!
