Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!
Some info about us:
We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.
Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.
Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!
Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

Sorry for going AWOL on all of you, but it couldn't be helped. THANK YOU so much for keeping this thread going! Real Life has taken over for a bit, with a vengeance, and I hope to return to this wonderful group again by the end of March - until then, I hope you're all enjoying your running!
I will pop in when I can, but don't expect it to be too often for another month and a half or so. However, I will try to answer any questions and check in to see how you are all doing.
One good thing that has come out of all this "real life" stress ... even without running, I've hit my goal weight, with very little effort on my part (not the preferred way, BTW, so you do NOT want to switch places with me).
Hope to see you all very, very soon and start helping us get closer to that goal again!!!!

Zarelha -- friendship knows no limits, including virtual ones. I'm happy you are okay and hope everything in your world gains balance again in the best way possible (however that may be).

Energygirl, be careful on that foot!! It's interesting you posted that in conjunction with the weather -- in Philly we are expecting some stormy weather tonight and tomorrow. Jenka, speaking of injuries, how's the knee? Better?
4.25 miles for me tonight, 3 of which was a tempo run. I've *officially* begun training for the Broad St. 10 Mile Run in early May! YAY!

Whee! Z's BACK! I am personally so incredibly happy to see her back on this thread that she created! Zarelha: I'm sorry that Real Life has gotten to you. It was our intent to keep RATW from becoming a burden on top of whatever it is that you are going through. Let us know if we can do anything to help you out! I agree with Primadonna, we're not imaginary!
PD98: um, my knee is a work in progress. I've discovered it matters what kind of shoe I walk around in all day at work. I originally had to stop wearing high heels to work because it hurt my knee, and now it seems that even flats with no shock absorption also affect it. So the good news is I have very pretty, very expensive shoes to wear to work now. Such a hardship! Hee! Good luck on your 10-mile run!

I got this link from a member in another forum and would like to contribute. just started running past few months and have 1st 5K next Sunday. Will not hit the avg of you long distance nuts but hopefully contribute 5 - 10 mi /week.
After two 5 K's in Mar/Apr may take a leap to a 10 K in May (at least thats the strech goal) ... Currently physical stanima does not seem my main hurdle its more getting over the mental issues of running for 30 or 60+mins (Shhh don't tell anyone but.... I never really liked to run more than 100 yds as an ex football player).

As a former weight-lifting junkie who avoided the treamill like the plague, I sympathize with you on the mental issues associated with running. It took me over a year of running to get over the mental hurdles associated with runs of over 40 minutes. And this was after I had already completed 2 half-marathons in my first year as a runner--so while I knew that I was physically capable of running for 2 hours, I found that I had to learn how to exorcise the mental demons that sometimes got in the way.
HI ZARELHA!!! Way, WAY cool to see you back. I'm so glad that you're okay, but sorry that Real Life has thrown you some loops. We're all looking forward to seeing you back on the boards soon.

jfk61: Love the pic. Am not, however, familiar with that particular set of wheels. I was hoping to get some Zipp 404's for Muskoka in September, and figure I'll do fine training on the Shimanos for now. Oh, and if you can hold that swim time for 2 - 4 kilometers, you'll be getting out of the water just behind the likes of Alexander and MacCormack! You've really progressed -- would that I could profess the same. I'm still trying to get down under 1:30 / 100 (my goal is to do 1:40 / 100 on 2k). How'd you do on the Kilometer swim (assuming your Masters team does the same as ours...)? I'm really impressed.
So there. You can be jealous of my bike and I can be jealous of your swim time. Even steven. Oh, and if you can pull of a really fast swim, I think you could count the swim AND the bike as your strong-points!

A question for all: What is the etiquette for warning people you are coming? For instance, today I was running on a sidewalk and there was a couple walking ahead of me. I needed to go around them, but they had stopped next to a tree. Now, when I have been the pedestrian/slower runner in this situation, I have heard people yell out, "Left." In my situation, it has always meant, I'm coming around on the left. So, today, I yelled out, "On the left," followed by, "Excuse me." Whenever I have to warn people (especially on a non-park/public path), I try to use polite language as most everyday pedestrians have no idea what I'm talking about. But today, the guy actually yelled back, "On the right!" I ignored it and kept running (thank you mp3 player). I don't know if he was correcting me or being smart, so I figured I'd ask what the proper ettiquette is. Thanks for the help!

To answer your question, primadonna98, proper etiquette is to let people know where you're coming from. Since people usually pass someone from the left (as in driving), it's best if one announces clearly something along the lines of, "to your left", or "on your left". I have learned the hard way, unfortunately, that it doesn't always help to be polite--while this is common practice among runners/bike riders, the typical pedestrian can be clueless about this custom, especially if they are on their cell phones, listening to music on their mp3 players, or just spacing out for whatever reason. I try to be nice the first time I am approaching someone, but if I get no response after several times of calling "to your left", I'll probably yell it out rather rudely (and by then, I'll probably be saying something like, "RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!!). It seems like you have been doing the right thing all along.
As far as the guy who yelled back, it was most likely his way of acknowledging that he heard you, and not an attempt to either correct you or to be a smart-aleck.
wrm2105-Wow! 23 miles!!! Way to go. When is your marathon?
My 50K is April 5--only 41 days to go!!! Training is going very well, I'm glad to report.
