Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Quote  |  Reply

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Thanks ultrarunner, space, and skinny!  To be totally honest, I never take ID with me running (because I'm on trails).   I always take ID with me on the bike, though...I carry an expired driver's license, an expired medical insurance card and $20 in a ziplock bag--that way all the info is there, and I don't have to keep swapping it back and forth.

After reading ultrarunners post, though, I went to the website and ordered a Road ID.  It amazes me that it wasn't the loss of my friend or the urging of his widow, but the little bits of wisdom from this thread that was the straw to break the camel's back of my inertia.

You folks rock.  Seriously.

Hola amigos!  I ran 13.85 miles today - my long run day.  And it was actually one of the best runs I've had in a while.  I felt so good the whole time even though I was on a treadmill for 2 hours.

I ran my hardest and slowest 4.35 miles today. No good in running after partying...

please add 2 for me today

3.4 miles for me for Wednesday while at 4H shooting sports camp.  It was a glorious run - the sun was shining, it wasn't cold .. just couldn't be better.  I had lots of hills, some of which about did me in, but even with struggling up those hills, I didn't lose lots of time.  The adults and the girls in my cabin were just astonished by my run and my plans to run the half marathon this month.  I hope I inspire some of the girls to take up running.

One of the reasons I like being an instructor on the black powder range at camp is that I get to serve as a role model for the young ladies.  Every year there are usually a few girls (and some boys) that are really nervous about shooting black powder rifles -- some who just plain don't want to even try shooting.  I never make someone shoot, but I'll usually get them to at least come up and load the firearm and accompany me to the firing line where I shoot, then have them clean the firearm and ready it for the next shooter.  Once they do that a couple of times and get used to the loud noises and the sulphur smell, they usually get brave enough to try shooting.  Then you see the biggest smiles on their faces when they have conquered that fear!

I think it's important for the young people to see the adults in their lives set goals and work toward conquering them.  When I first started running just over a year ago, I couldn't wrap my mind around running 26.2 miles.  Now that I have been training, setting and knocking out stairstep goals, that marathon distance for September isn't so scary.  I know it will be difficult, but I also have the confidence that I can persevere and do it.

I hope you have people in your lives that can be inspired by what you do and find the strength within themselves to set goals and conquer fears.  Your sharing of your triumphs (and your resilience after setbacks) serve to motivate me to keep pressing on.

Please add 10.8 miles for me today.

(Edit: change from 10.6 to 10.8)

The RoadID folks sent me a coupon code for friends to get $1 off--PM me if anybody wants it.

Hi everyone--

I guess it just wasn't my day yesterday at the 50K. I started off strongly enough, but never felt 100%. Things just feel apart for me after the halfway point, when my entire lower body started cramping (everything from my abdominals to my feet), and blisters started to form on both of my feet (and I rarely deal with blisters). I felt like I was literally out of gas, so I dropped out after completing the 2nd of the three loops of the race (20.7 miles).

So including the 1 mile warmup before the race, I ran 21.7 miles yesterday--definitely not was I was expecting or hoping. I'm disappointed (understandably), but I'll get over this--I'm taking a couple of days off before I resume preparation for my next race. I'm finally going to race the marathon distance on May 18.
wrm2105 - I'm so sorry to hear that : (
You sound like you're taking it in stride though.  You seem to have the right outlook...move on and focus on your marathon.  Just don't get too down about it or beat yourself up.  You ran over 20 freakin' miles - that is about 20 times more than most people could run.  If you had pushed you might have risked serious injury and you may have ended up missing other races.

You're going to kick butt in that marathon in May!
Thanks for your comforting words, minie13. Part of me thinks that I could have pushed it for the final 10.35 miles of the race, but I feared the possibility that I could do some serious harm to myself. If this was my only race for the year, I would have thrown all caution to the wind and pushed through the pain, but I have at least 4 other races of 13.1 miles or greater coming up this year, in addition to numerous other races ranging in distance from 5K-10K.

I'm trying to remain positive and hopeful about my performance in May, but my confidence is shot right now. Perhaps I'll feel better after a couple of good runs, but after training over the last 13 weeks and running almost 600 miles in that time, I think I need a couple of days off before hitting the road again.
10 miles yesterday, longest ever!!
wrm2105, I'm in awe of what you do; what race are you running on the 18th?

Finally, I was motivated enough to start working out again after three weeks of laziness and 11 pounds gained. It was slightly harder, but wow do I feel great!

I joined a week ago, but this is my first contribution- 3.4 miles.

Congrats on reaching double-digits on your long run, lebrowne. I'll be running the Rockford Marathon (Rockford, IL).
10.65 long, hard miles today....its amazing how my 13.85 on Friday was so much easier than my 10.65 today.  Just one of those days I guess.

wrm2105- Please don't let this ruin your confidence.  You did the right thing considering how many other races you're in this year.  Like you said you maybe could have pushed it if it was your only race, but it isn't...and why risk injury?  YOU ARE AWESOME! And seriously, like lebrowne said I also am in awe of you, as are so many others inithis group.  We all believe in you.

3.35 miles on Friday.

Back from vacation and definitely need to spend some time catching up!

Sigh... it's great to be back and sleeping in my bed. I must say, though, this time, Jenka, the "fitness center" was LEGIT! I couldn't believe it -- complete with cardio, free weights, machines, mags, TVs, and fruit! AND, despite it being right next to the pool, it was actually climate controlled. I was totally motivated to work out both days I was there. What a delightful surprise. The trip was a long overdue get-a-way for me and the hubby. We got to see both a Pistons AND a Tigers game, and I went to my favorite hole-in-the-wall spot: Cupcake Station. Oh, it's everything you could possibly imagine.

Welcome to all the new members -- there are so many! Drop-it-like-its-hot, I am so glad you checked in! I love your name; I have a funny story about your name, but it's neither here nor there so WELCOME! With all the new runners, I can't wait to see/tabulate this week's totals!! I'll be double-checking everything since I've been away for a bit, but in case I miss something, feel free to let me know.

Congratulations (belated) also to Jenka for the fantastic half-mary and to minie for taking it outside!! Also to jfk for his PR and lebrowne for hitting double digits. Wrm, it sucks that your body slowed you down and ultimately kept you from finishing, but I am truly amazed by what you do so take it to heart that you have a lot of people supporting you on this thread! I'm sure I missed some and I apologize. Just know that everyone running on the thread inspires someone else, especially me!

And kscout, your message was very inspiring -- I imagine your students/kids learn quite a bit from you! Jfk, your story definitely reminded me of why I always run with a cell phone but that I need to start carrying ID. I'm usually good about it while traveling, but I think a roadid is in order. I'll PM you for the promotional code.

Ok, off to bed. I have to work tomorrow. boo.

Happy running!

Happy Monday, all!

Jfk, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I have a Road ID and wear it every time I run. I always feel like a nerd when I put it on, but the image of me unconscious, lying on the road usually helps me overcome that feeling.

Wrm, you are still a winner in our eyes! Seriously, the fact that you even did the 20 miles is a lot more than most people can do in one run. And you had the strength and maturity to sop running when you should! How many people hurt themselves forever just because they were too dumb to stop? Like I always say, running is a lifetime goal, and being smart about stuff like that makes it possible for you to achieve greater things later. You have your whole life!

Skinny_kitty, you have my permission to smack me when and if I start complaining about the heat. Although, I prefer to run when it's much warmer (like, 80s) but when I gets above 90 I will usually retreat to the gym. I try not to complain about weather (I mean REALLY, what could we have less power over than the weather? It's easier to avoid death and taxes than it is to change the weather) but sometimes I forget. Bring on the smackdown!

Hi all,

I've been a little MIA lately - some heath matters that had to be dealt with, and no running post surgery until this past weekend. Today is my first "official" day back at the office (I had been working from home the last couple of weeks), and my first day back to my usual routine.....wish me luck!

Please add a total of 7 miles for me from the weekend.  A really tough 3 miles on Friday and another incredibly painful 4 miles from Saturday.

God - who would have guessed that I would be so drained and tired after a mere 2 week break???

Oh well, my goal for the week is just to take it easy and run a few more 3 to 4 mile distances before attempting to log any longer runs...I'm still healing, but it sure feels good to be back on track.

Ooh - and please add 5 miles from today. Slower pace than usual, but I got it done.
Please add 6.85 miles for me from Saturday, 4/5. Thanks!
Hi everyone.  Hope you all had a good weekend.

6.5 for me today
