Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

3.6 miles for me for today, 4/7

(so many hills!!!!)

Welcome back, fitness_freak!!! I was beginning to wonder where you were! Glad to see you are running again but sorry to hear you've had health problems. I hope all is well now!

Thanks for the miles, spacedreamer. The hills will do you good in the training! I used to hate running them but now I don't mind them. I have a bunch near where I live that I treat as goals. The day that I can actually jog up the one behind the apartment complex is the day that I go straight to the mall and buy myself a new outfit. Ha ha.

8.0 miles for me tonight... on a treadmill. Minie, I don't know how you do it. I'm glad the fitness room was empty so I could put whatever I wanted on the TV.

2.0 miles for me this week.

wrm I just want to echo everyone else.  It is good to listen to your body and avoid serious injury.  Still inspired by you and will be pulling for your marathon next month.

spacedreamer and primadonna what are hills?  I live on the coast and the closest thing to hills around here is a traffic overpass.  Does running in the sand accomplish the same thing as hill workouts?

ultrarunner2 I read your race report.  WOW!!  The more I read about endurance running the more interested I get.  How long have you been doing distances like this?  What is your training like?

6.05 Miles this week for me please.  (I moved this  past week and weekend..it's been a long 6 days, but at least I got in one run!  Next week will be better!)

Well I'm finally running (with bits of walking) again after all those bouts of being sick.  3 miles last night!
I figure I'd better get my runs in before tonight's tally...

I did 6.2 miles yesterday and 3.1 of track work the day before.

wrm:  I was watching a triathlon movie called, "What It Takes" and Heather Fuhr walked a big portion of the marathon portion of her race at Kona one year and she's a pro...to say the least.  She's also an avid runner who's managed to make unbelievable comebacks within a tri on the marathon leg alone.  BUT, she bonked at Kona (the world championships) in '05.  It happens to everyone, and I guess you know that, but please try look anywhere you can to find inspiration to keep your morale up.  The following year, Fuhr placed second.  Some days you got it, some days you don't.  (I am, however really, really sorry it happened to you the other day...I totally understand how discouraging a dnf can be...)

fitnessfreak:  Your probably tired from the anesthetic!  And the painkillers!  I'm not a crunchy-granola-type, but you might want to consider getting some tincture from your local healthfood store to help clean out your liver a bit.  It's worked wonders for me in the past.

jenka: I despise running in the heat -- and around here we have really, really humid summers.  BUT!  I've been running in snowstorms and rain and sleet these past few months and would just KILL for some 70 degree temps (without the bugs, please).  Oh well, I suppose we choose where we live, eh?

17.75 miles for me this week!

And can i say yay for 55 degrees and Sunny.  It was PERFECT outside today. :)

Hi--I just want to thank everyone for their support. Your encouraging words over the past few days have truly meant a lot to me. Rest assured that Saturday's events have not diminished my enthusiasm for running or racing. I still have a good number of races coming up this year, and with that, a good number of opportunities to redeem myself and to get in some good race results.

If I can find anything positive from the race, it is in looking at the provisional results of those who finished. When I was feeling my strongest, I was actually doing quite well. I recall the names and bib numbers of some of the people who were right around me in the first half of the race (before things fell apart), and they all finished within the top 10. So I'd like to think that I had the potential to place really well in the race, under normal circumstances.

Another unexpected positive outcome from Saturday's meltdown is that I didn't wear out my body excessively, having run only 21.7 miles that day. This will allow me to get back to training for my May 18th marathon sooner than originally planned. So I was back out there today, feeling stronger than I had expected, and completed 10.5 miles today.

Again, thanks for your support--this is an awesome group, and I'm SO glad to be a part of it!!

EDIT: Looked over my route and realized I didn't give myself credit for another half-mile on today's run, so please make that 11.0 miles today, not 10.5. I was wondering why my half-mile split times weren't matching with my average pace per mile.
11.1 miles for me on Sunday.  Lots of hills, good training for the half at the end of the month.  Husband was great support, served as a mobile water stop throughout my run.  Would drive ahead a mile, wait for me to catch up and grab a drink, then would drive on the next mile.  I teased him about us being the country version of the Volvo commercial with the mom on a bike - our version is the mom running through the rural countryside and catching up with the Ford truck!

Ready for a short, fast run today.
yeah wiliwigi sand running probably accomplishes as much as hill workouts without all the wear and tear on the knees and ankles - sand workouts are killer!! I'm jealous - where I'm from, we have rocky beaches, not sandy ones =)

4.35 this night

Please add 7.0 miles for me today --- that should make my week 24.8 miles

Did a lot better with the quicker pace today--slept in a little and skipped lifting this morning, which no doubt helped.  Still, it's nice to feel like I'm making progress.

Obviously, you're doing the right thing, wrm.  It took me so many years to learn to stop at the first sign of trouble.  I ran through bursitis for weeks until I couldn't even climb stairs;  I didn't run for over a year after that.

Hey RATW(s)--shouldn't we post a Memorial Day challenge?

45.8 miles for this week.
please add another 4 miles for me from today
7.8 for me today, which I believe brings me to 43.8 for this week.

Hills are those bumpy things in the road. You know when it goes up really high and then comes back down. What's sand? I live in a place called "the suburbs" and am wondering what this magical substance is. Laughing

Just teasing, wili, I have no idea if sand runs would count for hill intervals. I know I do them to get faster and to help prepare for races that I know have hills in them. Here's a link to Runner's World that talks about why running hills can help your performance: http://www.runnersworld.com/subtopic/0,7123,s6-238-263-264-0,00.html . Hope it helps!

EDIT: Jfk, yes, we should post a Memorial Day Run soon. I have to bow out as moderator b/c 1. I'm away that weekend for a conference and 2. I am really busy right now at work with end of the school year wrap up stuff and can't get to it. If we post soon, though, it'll give users about 6 weeks to train.

4.0 miles for me this week.

Any advice - I've been doing pretty well, upping my distance and intensity a little at a time over the weeks, but a few days ago everything started to hurt and I just seem to be one big ache from the hips down.  Too much?  not enough stretching?  something I'm not doing?

matty_h -- yes, you may have upped the distance too much at one time or need to do better with the stretching, but I'm inclined to think it may be more serious -- some sort of injury. I haven't the slightest idea as to what to look for or how to know so I'll let others on here help you with that. Either way, take it easy for a few days, see how you feel and then do a light run paying attention to what (if anything) hurts first and how bad so that you if you need to go to a doctor you can give them a detailed description of what's going on. The few days break may 1. be all your body needs to recover or 2. help you determine that it's NOT from overexertion, too little stretching, shoes, etc. Just make sure to take your time and listen to your body. Keep us updated!

2.0 miles for me tonight. It was meant to be a longer run but my colon got the better of me and it was too close to closing time in our apartment complex fitness room to go back. Oh well, better luck next time, and the run felt really good... Embarassed

matty_h I agree with primadonna98 pay attention to your body.  A friend of mine was experiencing extreme knee pain and after diagnostic tests and medical consults was told that his quadriceps muscles were weak and not supporting his knees very well.  These two links may help give some insight for leg pain and possible treatment:
